I have read too many posts about failures to burn, etc....

I am starting to believe that too many of these posts are the result of the lack of keeping the computer maintained and fine tuned.

Can we start to emphasize the importance of
1. Firewalls
2. antivirus software
3. Anti-Malware programs
4. Disc optimization
5. Registry
6. conflicting programs
7. OS version & updates (Same for software versions)

I've learned to be prudent when installing a new program/update on any of my computers.

As a result, one seems to have no problems with any movie. The other has no problems on the internet.

When you have a winning/working combination, don't mess with it untill you have to or want to. Every up-date does not seem to be an improvement for every system. Bios & firmware factor into this equation.

Could there possibly be a "help" selection?

Bottom line, take care of, and know your computer, and it will do what you want.

I'll throw in:

8. Updated firmware-like david66 posted
9. Quality media-should be #1
10. Quality burners
11. Good quality ps with enough wattage. Some of these new pcs come with very little wattage.
12. Extra fans and blowers to keep the heat down.

I don't agree with:

7: I keep my main pc updated with all the windows updates for sp2.
On my other 3 pcs- I just use xp /SP1 and avoid all future updates. Both these pcs still burn at 99.9%+ success rate. 3 have access to the net,but only 1 at a time.

Tx for the replies.

Now can we start emphasizing some of these when we respond to those cries for help?

It's hit or miss a lot of the time when there are responses. Let's get down into the nuts & bolts of a system when there is a problem.

How about using legitimate programs, cracks/hacks can cause numerous problems also.

I've taken a cheap ebay pc: Athlon barton 3000+/512 mbs pc 2700/80 gb hitachi hd/and khypermedia +8x DVD-RW drive and it's a completely different pc now.

It wasn't right from the get-go.Around 5 months later,A brownout destroyed a lot of stuff in it,and it kept blowing ps's all the time.

New mobo-which I swapped out with an identical/lost 3 gbs of ram/ 4 cheap ass ps's I got from a local repair shop.I'd burn dvds, but had trouble with the AEC enhancements in DVD Shrink. Black screens/Bluescreens/freezing/graphics totally sucked/etc.

Major issues, and all virtually went away after putting in a 400w ancec smart power ps and simple reformat. That khypermedia +8x drive had to go. A benq 1620 with around 3500 backups is in that pc.Combined with a Lite-on 167t- On the Fly rip and burn is no problemo. I just doubled the ram this week to 1024 mbs,and no noticeable improvement. It did start running slower after I hooked up my cousin's 100 gb HP external HD last month.

@Buik - it's true that there should be more emphasis on stuff like this in posts, however for me personally the site is just too big (and popular and busy!) for me to contribute/get into that much info each time, but of course these things are important. I know i don't contribute anywhere near as heavily as i used to in the Nero forum lately but those particular problems are incredibly straightforward to work thru without having to worry about the stuff you mentioned. not disagreeing btw just giving my 5pence.

Anyone who knows me knows i go with recommending newest firmware/software/quality media; media is one of the most important aspects of burning.

i concur with saugmon's reply here pretty much -

- i'm SP2 but i don't buy into the endless windows updates either; we have those foisted on us at work as per corporate policy but then all we use those pc's for is boring email access and heavily monitored internet, not multimedia stuff where i wouldn't want 6000 windows updates added each day. my burner pc these days isn't on the net but that's only because i can never be bothered to fire up the wireless usb dongle gadget; when that pc was my main workhorse pc i stayed connected to internet permanently however i wouldn't mess with pc during the actual burn.

saugmon has great success with older/old version(s) of Nero (can never keep up with how many pc's you have lol) and that's great; i endlessly recommend noobs keep Nero up to date but you and i know that for our purposes older software can be fine as we know what's involved. (well i keep at 6.6.0.18 but i still concur, if that makes sense, i've overexplained my point i think).

OK then, let us start to ask for more specifications for the computer having the problem(s). Not only hardware, but software & firmware also.

If they cannot provide any part of the above, perhaps they are not going to be able to comprehend the information being given. If that is the case, why respond to the post?

I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box........ I get by tho

Tax time in the USA. God have mercy on me. I'm doing my own.

Any way, optimize your box. Once you have a good combination, don't screw it up!!!
