BenQ 1650 - How fast of a processor needed??

Hello, I'm a long time lurker and now a noob poster. I've searched around and haven't been able to find if the processor speed has anything to do with the burn quality or is a good drive sufficient enough.
I burn on my P4 3.0GHz laptop now and get good burns with the stock burner but I want to get a desktop for all of my burning needs. I have access to an Athlon XP 2200+ (about 1.8 GHz clocked) with 512MB RAM....
With this setup would I be able to get good burns with a new Benq 1650 or is the processor going to be a hinderance. Any info is much appritiated (I hope the 1.8 GHz will be enough processor to get good burns so that I don't have to fork out big $$$ for around a 2.4-2.8) Thanks!!!

Oh yeah, I do know about good media too. I have about 300 Sony 8X TYs sitting here that I'm slowly working through. I can get 95 - 90 scores right now but I'm afraid my burner won't last since it is the only drive so it's required to do ALL of my disc work so it has already seen A LOT of hours and the quality hasn't been quite up to snuff recently. That's why I want another comp where I can have multiple drives and let the burner be there for burning only. Thanks!!

It should be fine. I get good burns on a P4 1.5Ghz with the Lite-On SHM-165H6S. I don't see why a 1.8 should hinder it.

Benq has some very low pc specs.
Your specs are quite adequate. I have a benq 1640 installed into a p3 598 mhz celeron that will give any of the other 3 pcs I have a good run for the money. Just may take a little longer. I've got my main pc in my sig/athlon 3000+/and a p4 1.4 ghz. You'll notice the processor speed when you use programs like DVD Shrink and Nero recode2,because they will slow down your pc. There's other ways around it: Keep compression down to a minimum. The more compression,and the use of quality enhancements and those backup times increase signifacantly.
Burn those sony tys at 8x. They perform better at their recommended 8x speed on all 4 of my benqs.Wait till you pick up some Verbatim +16x,those babies will absolutely fly. It's the best media I have found for my 1650-which means my scans are way better at the 8x-12 burns. Slow burning on those verbs is not good.Way too many read errors for me.
I've got 4 benqs: 2- 1620s/1-1640/and a 1650. Their booktyped backups will play anywhere I want them to. Stick with the plus format and booktype them. The dash backups off of all my benqs don't even come close to the stand alone compatability rate as my booktyped backups do.

Cool, thanks for the info!! I did all the research on which drive to get and what media to buy here so I knew I'd get some excellent help on processor speed as well!! I already figured my Shrink times would be slower but I don't care about that since the computer will be primarily just be doing that stuff so no need to compress quickly. Just didn;t want to get a subpar processor speed and regret it for a long time.
Thanks again and I will definatly burn those 8x TYs at 8x and I'll even look into some 16x Verbs next time they're on sale and I have some $$$.

Just for the heck of it, I installed that BenQ 1650 in a 6 year old WinME computer with AMD 1300 processor, 512 RAM. Worked fine!

9mmruger1 - I just got one delivered to me today. Great drive! My Lite-On DVD-ROM drive wasn't reading discs and was basically just sitting there, so I just decided to get a new drive because I didn't want to wear out my Plextor.

I had a benq 1620 in my old computer it was a 900mgz 128 ram and it workwd fine at 4x

My original benq 1620 has about 3300+ backups,many on the fly,and its booktyped backups play just about anywhere.
It has been in 3 different pcs and still performs as well as day 1.It will not die.
They do last longer if you don't use them to rip with.
