Start up Internet Explorer.
Click on TOOLS/Internet Options
Click On Programs Tab
At the bottom of the window click on Manage Add-ons

Now in the list find where it says (Windows Genuine Advantage) and clik on it to highlight it.

Now at the bottm click the radial dial that says disable.

Now click OK.

Now click Aplly on the internet options window.

Now close internet explorer and then start it again and you will bebale to install windows updates without validating.

In order to apply larrylje method, you'll need to have win xp SP2 already installed. If it's installed, run IE and goto tools-->manage Add-ons, at the top choose "Add-ons that have been used by Internet Explorer" from the dropdown menu, now click on the "Windows Genuine Advantage Validation Tool" choice and choose disable, click ok, close IE, run IE and go get your updates.

If he is getting the validation part on windows update then he already has SP2 installed on it.

But that is true didnt notice the mange add-ons in the tools drop down menu. So yes just click on that. Then find the Windows Genuine Advantage and disable it.

It doesn't work that way any more, Microsoft will now ask for validation of the OS reguardless of whether SP2 is installed or not. The difference will be, if SP2 is not already installed he will not have the Manage Add-ons option under the tools menu and therefore will not be able to use this workaround to defeat the validation process.

@ddp

Before pressing 'Custom' or 'Express' buttons paste this text to the address bar and press enter:

javascript:void(window.g_sDisableWGACheck='all')

I believe that this method for bypassing worked for a while, but has been patched by Microsoft and nolonger does so. The above method is the only one that still works.
