I'm trying to rip Van Wilder with AnyDVD and its giving me an error saying it can't read the dvd and something about firmware or regions or something

Van Wilder is an old enough movie that you don't need AnyDVD to do it.
I did it with just DVD Shrink w/ Nero burning it.
You may need a firmware update. Check here, for your model burner:

its not a prob with the burner b/c i've tried 3 diff burners/rom drives and i get the same AnyDVD error. I also tried DVD43 and that didn't work either so im assuming its a problem with the disc even though I can watch the movie fine

Yeah, possibly a problem with the pressing of the original. Also a possibility that you have a conflict on your computer, with your software for backing up the movies.
Don't know what to tell you Do a search for VOB Blanker, and you'll probably find a step by step gui9de on how to use it. It may help. Some folks swear by it..........

Your disc is probably damaged but your player "overlooks" these minor problems whereas burners are much more sensitive to such things...

Dvd43 can conflict with other programs like AnyDVD. You should remove it completely if you have AnyDVD.

Try AnyDvd & Clonedvd2
or Any Dvd & Nero Recode2
see if it lets you do MOVIE ONLY...
I had the same problem with a defective DVD a few days ago.. It was a bad file within in the extra featuress that was stopping me from ripping it to the hard drive.. So I had to do Movie only .. No Biggie...
