If you want to use an enthusiast/consumer board, get the X2 4400. Socket 940 is generally only used now for commercial/server systems, FAR less choices in motherboards. Also, the X2 proccessor is dual-core, so it will be better for multitasking. You can easily overclock the X2 to over 2.4 GHz, so don't concern yourself with the clock speed. Get the X2 4400+.

Athlon64 San Diego core 3700+, ASUS A8N-E, Sapphire X1900XT, 320GB WD SATAII HD, 2GB Gskill mem. Win XP Pro SP2. Pioneer DVR111D. Nero 6.6.1.4, DVD decrypter 3.5.4.0. ,PS2 V7 w/no-solder and swap magic

You really shouldn't be looking at the Opteron 250, as it is a 2-way CPU, not a dual core.
It will work as a 1 way CPU, but that is just wasting money.
It really is designed to be used in conjunction with another identical CPU in a dual CPU board.
You need to look at either a 150 for a single core Opteron, or 165, 170, 175, 180 for a dual core.
The equivalent clock speed to a 4400x2 is the Opteron 175 which is still slightly more expensive.
The Opterons are made for servers and as such are made to a higher standard, they do overclock better than the other AMDs.
The 4400x2 is definitely the best choice of the x2 CPUs if you can't stretch to the 4800 or fx60, as it too has the 2x1MB cache.
The entire dual core Opterons have the 2x1MB cache which means that it may be worth looking at the 170 as an alternative to the 4400x2.
Best value single core Opteron is the 148 which overclocks like on other (2.5GHz+ on air)
