Wanted to start a new thread re a unit I have on order from Wal-mart.com. It should arrive in a few days and I was wondering if anyone else had one of these units and what I could expect. If no one posts, I'll be the guinea pig and honestlty report on my findings. I sure hope it's better than the last Emerson DVD/VCR recorder I got there! I'm STILL dicking around with Funai tech suport because of "cannot record on this disc" error messages. And it started out so great! Maybe this new unit's hard drive will make a difference. We'll see!

I have just purchased the Emerson EWH100F with 80 GB and have it set up. I also have a satellite which allows channels through 900. If I want to record channel 500, for example, how do I program this? When I program through timer recording, I have the choice of channel 4, L1, L2, L3. I understand that 1,2,3 are different lines coming from peripheral units such as the satellite box, receiver...so do I have to put the satellite box on 500 and L1on the recorder? What if I am not home and don't have the satellite box on the right channel. Is there a way to pre set the higher channel and time I want?
Thanks for any help!

Just got hold of one today....
just playing around with it.
so far, while recording a vhs that is a 2nd generation, onto the
DHH at EP..quality was as good , maybe a little clearer that the tape.
1 thing, on the box, it says " pause live TV", haven't figured out how yet..made it sound kinda like a Tivo...or did I misunderstand...
but still playing with it..

sus929 - I think you have to have the sattelite reciever on the channel you want and the recorder on line 1, 2, etc...
This was designed more for people with cable TV but it will work fine with your sattelite reciever other than what was stated above.

Thanks Dimetro, I did try recording by putting the satellite on the higher channel and left the recorder on "4" and it worked! I have found that I can "timer-program" the sat. remote as well as the DVD remote. Both are easy to do. I have never thought about programming the satellite, but that seems to be the key. Thanks for your help.

FINALLY! After being sick and putting off setting up this wonderful machine, my opinion on this unit. First, I found only one very minor drawback - you cannot time-record on the VCR. Of course, 99% of the time you would use he DVD or HDD anyway. Concerning the recording on the HDD and the DVDs - Excellent! I use mostly the XP mode for top picture and sound quality and am VERY satisfied (so far) with the results. The unit is easy to operate and the manual easy to understand. I have yet to dub from one media to the next so the jury may still be out in that respect. I record off Dish network on L1, so channel changes are not an issue with me. As far as the discs go, I use 4x for the DVD-RW and 8x for DVDs. No problems with either. All in all, I give this unit an "A" as far as performance, value, and satisfaction are concerned. Again, my opinions only!

I forgot to mention, to "pause live tv" just hit the play button on the remote while the unit is recording. It will begin playback from the beginning (you can fast forward/rewind, etc...) and will continue to record in the background. You can pause it too but note that if you hit the pause button before you hit play it will pause the recording. The playback must be started first.

I have had my unit since January of this year. I have been pleased up until now. For some reason the unit will no longer format DVD-RW discs.
I have purchased different name brand discs but I continue to get a format error. Has anyone else run into this problem. By the way, it formats DVD-R discs fine.

I haven't had any problems with DVD-RW discs yet, although I don't use them that often. I used Fujifilm DVD-RW discs and they worked.

I have tried Maxell and Imation DVD-RW discs with no success. Originally the Maxell's worked fine. One thing that I have not tried is to cleaning the optical sensor.

I'm hoping this is a good place to stick this post, but I cannot format a DVD-RW disc after 2 uses. I have an Insignia home DVD recorder/VCR which I used to record a 50 minute program, then subsequently initialized the disc and recorded 10 minutes on it. Now neither my Memorex DVD burner (using Nero), nor that Insignia unit will format or recognize this re-recordable disc. The disc is an LG 2X Max DVD-RW (it came with the unit).
Are there any brute-force techniques for formatting stubborn media?
Thanks,
haZe

The player may not be, but my memorex 8X external DVD burner certainly is. When I put the disc in, it's simply not recognized as writeable.
Thanks for any help.

I bought 1 of these about a year ago. Having problems as of about 2 mos. ago. It records fine on hd but when I try to tranfer to dvd I get error messages. One says NO PROGRAM and the other says DISC ERROR. I've tried all recommended discs as well as Sony and Maxell but none work. The 1st 10 mos. I had it I used Sony and had no problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've already bought 1 lemon 2 years ago(Ilo) and I can't believe it's happening again.

The disc error message started happening to me a few months ago as well, when I try to record to DVD. It records fine for a while, then stops with the dreaded disc error. I'm going to try running a CD/DVDcleaner disc through it and see if it helps.
One other note - I took it apart once and found that the hard drive in it is just a standard IDE drive. Sometime I may try and put a larger drive in there and see what happens. I may have to copy the contents from the original drive to the new one though, I'm not sure if the "operating system" is on the hard drive or what.
