AMD are the tops for gaming. Whether a dual core is what you need is questionable though.

Pulsar is correct,my Amd will run circles around not only my Pentium set-up but a lot of Intel's faster offerings as well.The only speed advantage I can see for my P-4 is in video encoding where it beats my Amd hands down.

It is worth getting the dual core.
No matter what you are doing, it helps to have the extra core to run apps in the background.
I no longer have to close anything down when playing games, and I still have the settings max'd out.

thanks guys sorry about the caps anyway so the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4800+ Socket 939 1MB is the one i should get is there a particular motherboard that i should get with it? sorry if im anoying you with these question i just wonna make sure i can get the best out of the first pc im planning to build.

I would recommend the Asus A8N32-SLi Deluxe as it has the 8 phase power supply.
Or the A8N SLi Premium which I am using, very stable board.
If you are looking at overclocking then either the A8N32-SLi or the DFI LanParty NF4 SLI-DR EXPERT.
These are presuming you will go down the Nvidia (SLi) route, rather than ATI (Crossfire).
The 4800x2 is a seriously good CPU, you won't be dissapointed with it at all.

ok iv decided to go with AMD Athlon 64 4400+ socket 939 Dual Core 2.2Ghz 1Mb as i would be able to overclock thhat to around 2.4. i first decided to make a pc with intel so i had every planned out but now the processor has changed so i need some one to build a system for me that would cost around £900/us $1576 and would be great for gaming.

My choice of boards are in the order listed.
You may be able to shop around and get some parts cheaper, all prices listed (except GPU and floppy) where taken from Overclockers.co.uk which is not the cheapest.
The 7900GT is currently £199 at lowest on the web (inc free del)
I can't see anywhere being cheaper than that.
