Movie on DVD+RW disc not detected by either '1 Click DVD Copy' or 'AnyDVD'

My first post here. Any suggestions on this, guys? I've the latest versions of '1 Click DVD Copy' and 'AnyDVD', and a new Acer Aspire 3620 laptop computer with facilities to burn dual-layer DVDs.

The other night I inserted into my computer a movie on a DVD+RW disc that readily plays on a couple of dedicated DVD-players around the house here. But my computer thought it was a blank disc. That's all right, I thought, I'll just turn on 'AnyDVD'. But in fact 'AnyDVD' also failed to detect a movie on the disc (which I think is recorded in NTSC format, btw). Complicating things is that the disc in question was one of three or four - a virtual set, all recorded at the same time - sent to me by a friend in America a couple of years ago. But only this particular disc isn't being detected by either the computer or by 'AnyDVD'. Yet, as I say, ALL of the discs in the set are playable by standalone DVD-players around the house.

In 'AnyDVD', Safe Mode is turned off.

Can this little problem be solved, would you say?

Thanks - Ken52

It has been my experience that laptop drives are not as robust as other drives in reading and recognizing all types of media. Have you tried using a friend's computer to see if the disks are recognized on that system? Were these disks recorded on a standalone DVD recorder or burned on a computer system? If another computer system will recognize the disks, the problem is a picky or malfunctioning laptop burner/drive. Have you tried playing other DVDs in the laptop? Have you burned any DVDs with your new laptop? If the drive turns out to be picky, you may want to invest in a regular burner and enclose it it a USB2 or Firewire external enclosure. Many if not most of us lappy users prefer regular burners to laptop burners.

Thanks for all of those wise thoughts, laddyboy. I've successfully backed-up a range of other DVD discs using this new computer of mine. This particular disc is an exception, I guess. As my reason for buying the particular computer in the first place was its DVD-burning, incl. dual-layer, facility, I'm reluctant to think of buying a separate burner!

One last thought. Computer drives lack the error handling that are built into standalone players. Disks recorded on standalone recorders, if that's the case here, are sometimes problematic with respect to computer drives. You might try using DVD Decrypter (free if you can locate it) and see if it can recognize and rip the RW disk's contents to your hard drive.
