Hi everybody,

I have experienced this issue ever since buying my Sony VAIO and maybe I have resolved it by alcohol dampening the whiskers of a CD drive cleaner.

I only tried that as a last resort as forever my optical drive has nearly always failed to play DVD's. CD's no problem, but not DVD's except once in a blue moon.

After running the gammot of spyware checks, firewall checks, software reinstalls, updates, patches, repatches, etc., etc., etc., and even trying all the forums for over a year w/o success in getting the DVD's to play, either my alcohol trick or my repeatedly trying different ways of closing the drive's carriage seems to have started playing my DVD's almost every time.

I hear a some laptop mfgr's have issues in soldering chips and even receptacles, so either the alcohol did the trick or I have some connection issues within the DVD aspect of my optical drive's carriage.

Any suggestions appreciated. Would like to finally put this thing to bed and start enjoying that area of my laptop.

Ya, I know, try taking it to a reputable shop for a checkup, but are their any such animals, and would letting someone tear it apart likely cause more problems than I have already?

What can you do to protect yourself against disreputable shop practices and downright incompetance?

I guess I need to do a lot of phone and leg work towards trying to find a good repair shop, but short of taking about anyone's word for a given shop, what else can I do?
