Hey, at the moment i've got a western digital caviar 40gb running my windows with a 250gb for storage. I'm contemplating getting a 74gb raptor to replace the 40gb. Is there a quick way of transferring all of what is on the 40gb to the new raptor. windows n everything so its like nothing has changed?!

cheers.

Hi, there are several tools you can use to do this but here is a link to a new free tool I have found. From what I have read it will transfer your operating system and partition your new drive for you in one easy step. http://partitionlogic.org.uk/

Make sure to read all instructions carefully and good luck!

P.S. Don't forget to post back with your results.

You can use the downloadable tool from Western Digital.
It sets the new drive up when added to the machine and then asks if you want the new drive as additional storage or to replace the main drive as the primary.

And let me tell you, you'll see a SIGNIFICANT increase in performance and a dramatic reduction in Windows load time with a raptor. Good choice.

cheers guys. i realised i had that western digital tool. think its called data lifeguard. is that the tool? so if when asked if i want the raptor to replace the old hdd.. it will copy all files from one to the other. i assume then that i take the 40gb out and the raptor will take over... right?

Unless others know something that I don't, I;ve had problems transferring from IDE to a Sata drive using Data Lifeguard. Seems something in the boot log isn't changed and It will not boot.

Now Sata to Sata or Ide to Ide, I haven't experienced any problems.

Maybe someone has advice on that. Just something to watch out for.

You didn't mention what your 40 gig was.

Is there any reason you don't want to do a fresh install?
Its the best option and will give you a clean platform to work on.
I run a stack of programs, and if I do a full reload from scratch, I can get everything loaded and updated as well as transfer files back within a few hours.

I just assume its on its last legs cos around a month ago the pc wouldnt turn on and the hdd started making a funny noise. i recovered it now and it seems fine. i just dont want that problem again. i could just be wrong due to the system memory being low when it crashed. we recently just did a fresh install. about 6 months ago if that. maybe im just bein over cautious.

Well, problem or not, there's nothing wrong with being overcautious.
