How do you know if there are errors?

If I rip all the files successfully, does that mean that there are no quality errors during the rip process? So that if there are any errors such as freezes or skips during play back, it would be a problem with the burn and not the ripping?

Yep it sounds like your issue is with the burn - probably media/burn speed related.
Players can be picky. The key is finding what works best for your set up. To improve your chances of no playback issues - here are some suggestions:
°Use quality media like Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim or made in Japan Maxell. For instore Taiyo look for made in Japan Fuji or Sony.
°Keep your drive's firmware up to date - this helps with the read/write strategies on media
°Take the burn speed down a notch
°If you drive can booktype - booktype +r's to dvd-rom

Thanks. I tried all that, but I'm not getting consistent burns. I even bought a new NEC 3550A and have the latest firmware. My old one, which is only 6 months old, is a Sony DRU-800A. I use TY's and Vergatims. Sometimes I get good scans and sometimes really poor scans. I don't touch the computer or multi-task when I rip, rebuild, or burn and I also booktype. I use DVD Decrypter, DVD-RB, and ImgBurn.

So both drives give you playback issues? Are the playback issues in a standalone player or in one of the drives?

I haven't checked the playback of the NEC drive yet in a standalone player. I just know that the scans for both drives are very inconsistent. I've gotten quality scores as low as 30 and as high as 97 on both drives.

How fast are you burning? Try to burn at half the rates speed of the media. I have an NEC and it's deadly fast....deadly for creating coasters. Keep your burn speed low and your consitency will rise.

I have been having some of the same problems. I have a new NEC3550 (firmware 1.Y6) and a Memorex DVD16+/-DL4RWID2 (firmware JWS6). To backup, I use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink only (occasionally VobBlanker for those difficult DVDs). I was getting great burns with both drives with quality scores 97-99. The only difference was that on the NEC drive, the PI range of PI errors was much much higher.
This is a scan of the entire movie; I don't care for all the extras and stuff like that.
I don't know what happened but I suddenly started getting lower and lower quality scores. I use TY DVD-R 8x, so it's not the media, and I also tried several different DVDs. I don't think I saved any of the scans from that. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, so with finals approaching, I just took a break from backing up my DVDs for a bit.
I started backing up DVDs again this past week and my quality scores consistently hit 95 every time. PI errors were high with the NEC (200-700 range) so not knowing what this meant exactly, I just used my Memorex burner.
After many successful backups, I'm having the same problem. Again, I tested several different DVDs the scans just got worse.
So, I have no clue where to go from here. I considered trying to update my NEC with the official firmware but I get the error 'Target NEC is not found correctly.' I'm going to guess this is because I have the Liggy and Dee's NEC firmware.
Any thoughts or ideas?

I don't think firmware is the culprit, in your last two scans it shows as being scanned with your memorex drive...which might be an even worse scanner than the NEC. The drive may be on the way out? Do the discs scan the same with both drives? Is the backup watchable? Do you get the same results with the same movie burned on both drives?

Alright, here is the scan of my backup for the movie "Closer" using my NEC drive.
Compare this one to my last scan on my previous post. Some movie, different drive.
So, it looks like the NEC gives a good quality score of a 97 so as long as the high PI errors aren't anything to worry about, it looks like I should stick with the NEC. I played the disc and didn't come across any playback issues either.
I guess the Memorex is just on the way out. Looks like I just might get a BenQ now :)

Burn a movie on the Memorex and scan with the NEC...your drive might not be on the way out, but sounds like a good excuse to get a BenQ. LOL

Yep, very tempting! And I get paid tomorrow...hmmm :)
Anyway, I did two separate backup for the same DVD: first two scans are of a backup using my Memorex drive. The second two scans show the backup using my NEC drive.

So, what do you think?
