I have had a lot of Mega issues of late the least of which being the number of expensive beer coasters I've been creating as a result of Nero and my USB2 DVD burner not being on the best of speaking terms.... Add to this my Cable Internet connection has been timing out approximately every 60 seconds making it difficult for me to post.Creaky and I have been working through quite a few possible solutions for my problem for a number of days now and I just thought about all that was going on and decided to try something different.
First off I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with 2 USB ports one of which is always religiously occupied byjust about the only worthwhile product Microsoft have ever put their name to The Intellimouse Optical 5 button (some credit can be given to them for their Anti-Spyware tool as well, though hardly original by amy stretch of the imagination)That leaves me one USB port.....
My Printer is USB, My Webcam - USB, My secondary HD- USB, My Cable Modem - USB, My Graphics Tablet - USB to name but a few essentials....
Therefore I have a D-Link 7 port USB hub (DUB-H7) to connect to my PC and hook up some of these peripherals to. Up to about 3 weeks ago everything seemed to e working okay. Then I notice a flood of Microsoft security updates coming down the line at me.... suddenly problems started occuriring on a large scale that happened only sporradically and on a small scale previously as a result of a microsoft horror Service pack....anyone remember about 9 months ago the patch that strangled their internet connection??? I fiddled around with the Hub last night and the night before, as you do, disconnecting everything, uninstalling the usb drivers, restarting the machine etc. etc but the problems didn't go away. Luckily for me I remembered today that I have an adaptec Duo PCMIA 2 slot USB2/Firewire connector (The firewire still doesn't work as a result of anotherMicrosoft 'update' by the way. Their hotfix failed to resolve the issue. My system has no working firewire connection now! I unplugged the D-Link. Plugged the Burner directly into my second USB port on the PC, The secondary HD where the source video into usb 1 on the DuoConnect and my cable modem into slot 2. I've been burning and encoding for a few hours now and all work's beautifully.... I can connect to the internet without it timing out!
It would very much seem that the latest MS patches have once again fried secondary USB interface devices...... The DuoConnect differs in that it act's more like a primary over a PCMIA direct link! This has cost me a lot of bucks on coasters as well as a lot of downtime and frustration in trying to find a solution to the problem.
Just a note to any of you out there having burning problems..... If you're burner is external USB2 and connected through a hub and things ain't exactly 'Hunky Dory' try plugging it into one of your primary USB slots on the PC if at all possible to see if that helps. Then find a forum that allows you to openly hurl bad language, abuse and whatever else you want to add to the mix, at Microsoft, sign up - and let fly!!!
Better still sit back for a few months, get as much councelling as you can so come summer's end you can rush out and buy 'Hasta La Vista' in it's shiny new box and you won't have to worry at all (remember you've had a whole summer's councelling). Whether that'll be enough to get you through the dark winter of what is likely to be the next 6 years of Microsoft constantly wrecking your head and playing with your nerves behind the scenes via their evil windows update scheme - may god be your judge!
