I was checking out this DVD burner on NewEgg and was considering buying it this weekend. I've seen a couple senior members here were using them ans was wondering how well they work if anyone knows?

I can't seem to get my quality up from like 89-90 when running a disc quality check on Nero and was wondering if this might help. I have a cheapo Dvd burner right now that I picked up at BestBuy about a year ago. It's one of those off brands (Dynex) but has served me well over that period of time, but as knowledge of coputers is creeping up on me I would just like to have something better you know?

I think my numbers on Nero as far as the PO/PI are concerned are ok, but I'm not 100% sure. Not to mention my daughter (12 years old now) wants a computer of her own so this purchase will also help benefit that purpose as wel...lol

Or any suggestions are welcome as to what kind of burner you would recommend? Thanks guys.

Hi,
It's my understanding that the latest batch of BenQ 1650s' from NewEgg come with BCFC f/w already. For the money possibly one of the best buys available. Certainly a worthy replacement for the 1640. At a similar price (apart from BenQs' 1655 slightly dearer, but with LS) the Pioneer 111 is a excellent drive. Though probably no yet available to you that side of the pond.
My preference is the 1650/1655 a more rounded drive in terms of compatability with media. + with BenQs support for bitsetting/overspeeding there's no real need for hacked f/w. Apart from rpc1 maybe.

Thanks a lot guys! Really loving this site here, and learning from it too!

Guess I'll pick one up then as they're only 30 something bucks with Like $5.00 for shipping. What a deal!

When I get it installed I'll post back up about how much I love it I'm sure. Kind of wierd though that there were some mixed reviews about that burner. Some people said they actually hated it and it did'nt work for them.

.. every burner ever made has it's fans and it's detractors ... the proof's in the scans .. and BenQ excels ...remember, the 'Q' stands for Quality .. and for the price you just can't beat it!!

Those benqs at newegg.com sell out very quick. $39 including shipping is a hell of a price for the benq 1650.

I'm on my fourth BenQ. Two 1620s,which will not die/a 1640/and 1650.

Use the plus format/booktype them to dvd-rom and good luck on finding a stand alone player that won't recognize them. You won't even have to worry about using the dash format again!

I avg 1 Coaster out of 500+ backups using all sorts of media.

They will burn anything you throw at them.

They perform better using a faster 8x + burn speed on quality media.

Benq updates their firmware very often.

Download qsuite 2.0 or 2.1 for some other programs that help your burns: WOPC/Overburn protection/Solidburn/Booktype management/and qscan.

The Benq 1600 series is the best bang for the buck! I'd put mine against any old walmart/staple's higher dollar drives anyday. They are Phenomenal and dependable.

If you use quality media/burn them at 8x/don't slap a sticker label on them/and booktype them to Dvd-rom: Any playback issues from your benq backups will 99% be stand alone player/s fault!
