Hey there. Here's the thing: I want to buy a notebook in Germany but ALL of them come with german windows and keyboard, so I want to format it and reinstall windows xp in english. I have an original winXP disc from a previous laptop (HP) and the license for it; the question is: 1) how to make the formating?, 2) will the hp disc work for it (meaning that if microsoft will allow it as a original licensed product and allow updates regardless of the machine?), does anybody know where to obtain new keys or sticks for it in english?
Thanks

Follow These Easy Steps, But Be Careful...

_______________
1. While You are working on ur windows, put the Windows disk english version
2. Then Go to Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart

[Figure 2]
_____________________________________________________________________
By These Keys: F1, Esc... etc.. u can select and change in the bios...
BE CAREFUL !!! If u did anything wrong in the Bios U can Lose The whole Computer!!!!!!!!
5. Now These Keys can be different from computer to another because every computer may have a different Bios Screen Or keys...
_____________________________________________________________________
Note: The target now How to Get To the {bold]Boot Sequence
In other words, we want to make the Computer to Boot / or work
from The Cd-Rom, Because We want to install The Windows Xp English Version From The Cd-Rom where is UR disk...
And u have to control The bios from where u want to boot
So, we have to choose "Cd-Rom"
How???
6. Now u Have To Go To The
[Boot] Menu or if u don't find The Word "boot" In The Menu Bar, go to the "Advanced" Menu...
_____________________________________________________________________
[figure 3]
_____________________________________________________________________
7. How to go there? You have to look first Where Are the Bios Keys (Figure 2)
So, to go to the Boot or the Advanced menu, u have to press on the right Arrow until u highlight The "Boot"/"advanced" Menu
_____________________________________________________________________
Figure 4
Now After u have chose The "Boot" Or The "Advanced" Menu, There u can control from where to boot....
_____________________________________________________________________
For Example:
_____________________________________________________________________
Figure 5
By The keys (depending on You Bios) get to The "First Boot Device" then click Enter and select "CDROM"....
_____________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________
Figure 6
Or make The "CD-ROM Drive" Be the First By the Keys...(by this kind of Bios)
_____________________________________________________________________
Or:
_____________________________________________________________________
Figure 7
_____________________________________________________________________
Or Select This Order: "CDROM,C,A" (in This model of bios)
Then Press "F10" To save and Exit The Bios
____________________________________________________________________]
Step 2 - Formatting And Installing
Now After that the computer will restart then it will boot from the Cd-Rom
I will continue that in another time because i am tired now 'cause of writing these steps lol

Hey bigshot20, thanks a lot. I'm sorry I didn't say this before, but that much I know, what I wanted to know was if the winXP disc that I have would format and then install, but i really apreciate it. One thing I still want to know is if the disc I have now will be accepted for updates. Thanks ;))

OR, you could just do this:
http://www.ficorp.com/intl_xp.html
But then you're going to have s-set and umlaut keys on your keyboard, instead of traditional US keys...
And no, your HP recovery disc won't install on that system unless it's the EXACT same system that you had before.
All flavors of xp but corporate assign a key based on the guts of the system, so you can't just move across. I think you actually only get something like 3 system upgrades before it locks too...I forget, been using corporate for years.

Asking for and helping with pirated keys are not allowed here. Let's be more careful in the future fellas.

Fairly sure he didn't think using his own disc was being a pirate.
And I never advocated or said anything about pirated keys, I don't think?
When he said "new keys" I'm fairly sure he meant new keys for his laptop keyboard....

My bad fellas. This thread was reported as piracy and being in a rush I didn't fully read the thread.
Now that I've fully read what's going on here I offer my apologies. Carry on folks - the demented moderator will leave you in peace :)

I might be a pirate by someone's definition (Dutch Sea-Law, you know), but I certainly wouldn't admit it here.
;-)

Exactly! I meant my notebook keys on the keyboard!! Bad thing that I can't use my disc in other computer, I bought the previous laptop and I SHOULD be allowed to use it, damn Microsoft. So it means you have to BUY A LICENSE evrey time???!!! What stupid planet this guys are from?? (Sorry fellas, I'm just crying out, buaa). OK then I format and install windows (sic), but nobody told me anything about the keys or stickers, can I get those? By the way, thanks a lot.

Hey guys, I've found some places for the stickers, great. Now my doubt is: preloaded with the winXP are some utilities from acer (the one I bought), so I wonder if there'll be conflicts or problems after formating-installing the new SO. What if I can't get those apps in english from acer?

I can't think of why you'd honestly need them.
A clean, pretty, fresh install of basic XP and you'll be fine, most of what comes on a computer from the company is just so much fluff anyway.
Now, here's the bad thing. Sometimes if you don't use a company's recovery disc on a laptop, you use the blue function keys. Not f1, f2, etc.
There should be a blue button somewhere on the lappy that says "Fn", and then over some of the other keys there should be blue characters. Like on the right side, you'll see a number pad, and probably over 6 and 7 you'll see an empty sun and a full sun...for brightness. There's usually one for volume, etc. Most people don't use them, which is fine, but if you don't use a recovery disc, don't expect to be able to...but you might! It's sort of random.
