Hi there Guys, im seriously running out of options here. i used to back up all my games faultlessly with TDK disks with the ID code TTG02 but now they have changed to lead in code TTH02 i get nothing but coasters despite being grade A media also.

so ive been desperatly trying to find another kind of media that performs as well. first off i tryed Sony 8x dvd-r's (SONY08D1) No luck performed even worse that the TDK's

so i decided to sod it and ordered some Taiyo Yuden. well they arived today much to my exitment 100 dvd+r 8x Yudens with ID code (YUDEN000-T02-00) and to my dismay these disks perform even worse than the cheap datawrite Infosmarts i had lying around i must be doing someting wrong. ive tryed recording at speeds 4,6 and 8x in booktyp dvd-rom and normal. but same results skipping like buggery

any ideas?

have you looked to see if your burner has any updated firmware available?
http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php
type in you model number (like Sony DRU700A)
also check what you have on your system now, see if what it finds is newer and if so upgrade. This can help alot with media compatibility.
Also i would get a laser cleaner and clean the drive.
There is no way you should be having problems with a genuin TY disc, or even the Sony discs if they say made in Japan on them.

Old firmware just does not recognize or burn newer media codes right for some reson.

other than that.
1. What program are you burning with and what speed?
2. is it the same game you are trying to back up, or several titles, and what are they?

hey there thanks fot the reply. Im useing alchohol 120% and DVD Decrypter and i tryed speeds 4-8. and have tryed book type dvd-rom and normal. i havent tryed updating the firmware was on that site before but couldent make heads nor tales of it lol. and im trying to backup many titles, shadow hearts 3, tomb raider legend, kingdom hearts 2 ect ect. i should also note My ps2 makes a clicking noise when trying to read the TY disks. the ps2 really sounds like its struggling. and im pretty sure the laser is fine because it plays over 100 backups on TDK disks i cant find any more and almost 90 origional games and dvd movies perfectly.

give me the model number of the burner and brand,
also what the current firmware you have is.
If you are not able to find anything i will do some serching for you.
I know when i first got my burner i also used TDK DVD's and they worked pretty much every time. Then i tried a few others and was not having a lot of luck. So i decided to update the firmware even though the burner was brand new out of the box. Then i had no problems with media other than TDK Printable, and Memosux.
the others worked fine.
4X should be a fine speed on an 8X DVD, never use 8x unless it is a 16X DVD which i do not advise. I use DVD Decrypter for all my back ups. And i am sure you know that booktyping is only for the DVD+R media. I have never quite got it down to where i know if i have booktyped it correctly or not so i stick with 8X DVD-R
I am not sure about that TY media code though, it should be something like TYGOx (x being a number like 4 or 5)
And it should be made in Japan. Same with the Sony and TDK, Both are made in both Japan and Taiwan. The one's from Japan are usually good while the one's made in Taiwan do not work nearly as well.

read this media guide, especially at the bottom where it talks about fakes from Sony and TDK

well i have now upgraded the firmware of my drive and its still the same. i tryed a few of my old TDK backups and a few origional games and they all work flawlessly still. it just appears my PS2 doesent like Taiyo Yuden disks like it doesent like any other kind of media ive tryed apart from the old TDK's you cant get any more, so it looks like im out of options. However i went over to my Mother's house and tryed them on her ps2 and they work fine on hers. so maybe my ps2 is faulty? origional games and my origional backups work.. However all these other kinds of media the lense (i assume its the lense anyway) makes a horrible clicking noise as it reads from the disk and some times it turns into a continiuouse cliking/buzzing noise wich is only fixed with a sharp drop kick to the little bugger.

yeah, if they worked on another PS2 then the burner is fine, the game back up is fine, and the media is fine or they would not have worked on the other PS2.
That only leaves 2 options that i can think of.
1. clean the laser
2. adjust the laser angle (this one is easy but you have to do it in small steps and remember to mark the original position of the laser with a pen in case you need to put it back, it will also void your warranty if you have one because you have to open it up)
I can give you a guide on how to do this on he old PS2 (chunky)
but i have no idea how to adjust the laser on a new one.
