I've just upgraded my system with an amd 64 3500 and arctic cooler silencer 64 ultra tc. Im gettin about 40C when the system is idle and the cpu fan is only going about an average of 500rpm. I was wondering if this is ok because i think that i pretty hot when running idle? Thanks in advanced.

Make sure you have cool and quite or similar function disabled in the BIOS, otherwise the system will slow the fan down.

That temp is okay, but you should be able to get it lower with that cooler, as they are far better than the stock coolers.
Whats the airflow like in the case? and what way around do you have the fan on the cooler (pulling with or pushing against the main airflow of the case)?

I have the cool n quiet utilty disabled and the airflow in the case is well ventilated. The cpu fan is pulling with the airflow. Does anyone know how to change the cpu fan speed to make the processor cooler. I have a asus a8n sli se if that helps.

did you make sure your cpu fan is placed correctly on the cpu? Did you use paste? It might just be your type of cpu fan. I don't know.

I'm using a zalman quiet cooler and I OC'ed my CPU 3700+ from a 2.2. to a 2.75 and my idle temp is only 35C. Hope taht gives you a point of reference.

Not sure about the settings of the fan, but I've just checked my other system running that fan, and it is running at just over 2300 RPM, but that is on a DFI board, the CPU (Opteron 150) is idling at 33*c.

Hey i've got an asus a8n-sli premium, so it might be similar. From my experience (and i've had 2 asus amd boards now) these motherboards have a Q-Fan (or something like that?) function in the bios which adjusts all the fan speeds depending on the cpu temperature. If you turn this off it will make the fans go at 100% all the time.

In fact, it is good to have 'cool and quiet' on because then when your cpu is idle it will reduce to a lower frequency, thus consuming less power, and generating less heat.

With this enabled, my cpu is at 40 degrees celcius when idle, but I only have one 80mm intake fan, and my power supply is fanless. Please don't laugh at me - i'm saving up for a 120mm fan (my finances are very limited).

However 'cool and quiet' may reduce your gaming performance by about 1/4 of a frame per second. Beware ;-)

My Rig:

AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Venice @ 2.21GHz,
512MB Elixir RAM (gotta do something about this),
2x 80GB Samsung Spinpoint (RAID 0 Array),
Powercolor ATi Radeon X800GTO
Asus A8N-SLi Premium Motherboard,
E-MU 0404 Sound Card
17" Unbranded 13ms TFT (as my budget dictates)
Pioneer DVR-109XLA1 DVD±RW,
'Nicely Modded' SuperFlower SF-464T2-G Case
Silverstone ST30NF 300W Fanless PSU (With Custom UV Braiding)
Windows XP Pro (legit believe it or not!)
