Don't have a clue where to post this but I think it should be here, right ?

Anyway, I am curious which of you people actualy produce music ?

To kick of, I do (:P) and I use :

Cubase SX 3
Ableton Live 3
Reason 3

If there comes any reply to this (i.e there are producers on here) I will post a list of VST's and we'll take the discussion from there. At least if somebody wants too :)

those are good apps, but nothing beats ProTools. Been using it for six years, teaching it for three.

For the best quality mp3s use EAC (exact audio copy) to rip your audio CDs and LAME to encode them. Follow this guide:

hahahaha...

No everyone has his own favorite program to use. There is no way telling which program is better because it's about creating music.

In fact, I don't know jacksh*t about ProTools... can you tell me the big difference between what I use and ProTools ?

On a personal level, I would definitely disagree with the statement that "nothing beats ProTools".
On the contrary, there are several apps that are superior to PT.
With PT, you are stuck in DigiDesign's loop, with all the problems that it entails - seriously overpriced addons (hardware) and plugins if using TDM.
About the only advantage to using PT rigs in TDM are that your track counts are fixed according to your hardware, so you always know exactly what to expect.
Nuendo blows PT out of the water as far as sheer flexibility & ease of use goes. My system simply does not crash - period.
Recently did a week of 5.1 mixes, and the co producer was amazed it did not even as much as hiccup once in 5 full sessions - he came from a MOTU/DP & PT 7 package, where - and I quote -
Quote:
the thing crashes at least 3 times a day
PT cannot handle interleaved streams either - and I am not even sure if to this day it can deal with something as simple as a stereo file yet unless it is split into 2 mono ones. Might be wrong though.

To the original poster - there is nothing wrong with what you are using, as long as it can do what you need it to reliably.
The criteria of a good package is that it will do what you need it to.
Cubase SX3 has it's fans and it's critics.
As do all packages.
At the end of the day, there is very little difference between them in terms of what can be achieved - it's not what you have but how you use it is the euphemism, I believe.
Put simply, it is (almost?) impossible to listen to a mix, and say "That was done on Cubase" or "That was done in PT".
