problem converting avi files to divx

I am having problems with converting my avi file. I heard that mpeg2 and divx takes up the least amount of space so i tryed converting avi to mpeg2 with winmpg. the result was weird, the file was reduced for one but the play time was screwed up and i couldnt fw, and for the other one the file size increased but the resolution grew lager. so i tried to convert to a divx with virtualdub 1.4 but i had a problem with the audio conversion, for some reason my audio codec is not right?

plz help me, i am quite new and i dont know what to do. if it is hard to understand what i am saying plz let me know or just forget about it and tell me how u guys convert your files. thanx.
