I downloaded 2 movies and they can be played on my PC, but they play only on 1 of 3 of my stand alones. That one was a stand alone DVD recorder. I keep getting the following message on the one in my room:

This disc cannot be played

Please check the TV system.

Kaity, we meet again.

Are you sure that you downloaded dvd's, not Divx's or Xvid's? Then...did you download .iso's or a bunch of files like .VOB? And...if it was a bunch of .vob's and .ifo's, did you burn them as a "video DVD", placing all those files in the VIDEO_TS folder on the disc?

Also, some dvd players don't like dvd+r's. Some don't like dvd-rw's. Yes, there is a difference between dvr-r, DVD+R, and DVD-RW.

Good luck, gimmie more info if you want more help.

I don't know if they are DivX or Xvids. I don't know how to tell. One movie was an ISO with an MDS file. I burned that with ImgBurn.

Another was a bunch of files that included VOB's. They look identical to files I've ripped with Decrypter using File Mode. I burned them as DVD-Video using Nero and placed them in the VIDEO_TS folder. I used DVD+R and booktyped them. I even tried reauthoring them with Shrink and rebuilding them with DVD-RB without compression. All my players have been able to play my regular ripped movies, but not the torrent movies.

Ahh, nice.

If the total filesize is around 800Mb, they're Divx/Xvid/SVCD.
And...unless you buy a standalone DivX player, or an xbox and modify it, or you send video to your TV from your computer, you won't be able to watch these on your TV.

Oh, and before someone flames me, you can transcode divx/xvid back to DVD, but it takes HOURS and you lose lots of quality, not worth it imo.

If you actually got .vob's, and burned as a video dvd w/ Nero, placing them in the video_ts folder, AND it plays on your computer but NOT your stand alone, I would have to assume it's the media, or it could also likely be that they are PAL movies you're trying to play on an NTSC system.

Double check the .nfo files that generally come w/ any torrent, they usually include special instructions for you, open them w/ notepad.

Good day to y'all!

Kaity, you most definitely have dvd ready files. When you uncompress your dvd files and it's an iso, it's dvd ready.

The easiest way to burn an iso is to use dvddecrypter as that filetype is native to it.

Next thing: have you had any problems playing this media on your standalone players before?

They didn't come with nfo's. The total file size is around 4300MB, the same size as a full movie rebuilt by DVD-RB or Shrink. I think they are Divx/Xvid/SVCD. Someone else recommended I use dvdSanta and it worked on one of them. I haven't tried the other movie. I just don't know why they would encode it in Divx and not make it compatible on stand alones.

The files were .vob's. They looked identical to movies I've ripped with Dvd Decrypter.

I tried burning with Decrypter, ImgBurn, and Nero.

I don't think it's the media. I use Ty's and Verbatims DVD+R's. My stand alones play my other movies. Some may have freezed or skipped, but they were able to play them. These torrent movies aren't even recognized.

I just found out they're PAL format.

UPDATE: I got them to work by using Nero Vision Express and converting them to NTSC. Thanks guys.
