I have followed the alkohol's Guide

To Convert AVI movies/files into DVD using Nero Vision 4 guide by alkohol

It has been very helpful. Near the end of his guide is the following paragraph:

1) open up Nero StartSmart, then click on Nero Burning Rom
02) EXIT out the "New Compilation" when it pops up
03) click on "Chooses A Recorder" (it's a small burner icon next to (I) and the arrow down)
04) click on ?Options," then on "Book Type Settings," set to
"Automatic" and click "OK" - that's it... easy as smoking. Now every
time when you burn using a DVD+R, DVD+RW or DVD+R DL disc, Nero will
?automatically? change the Book Type into a DVD-ROM format.

On my Nero I don't have the option to set "Book Type Settings," to automatic. I have a line on the bottom of the screen that says

"Buffer Underrun protection"

but no line under that.

How can I set "Book Type Settings" to automatic??

What's important is what burner do you have. Nero won't give you the option if the Burner isn't capable.

Some burners, like HP seem to be OK, but others, like NEC or Plextor need some type of software run, or a firmware that will support the Book Type setting.

So, what burner and what firmware version do you have?

I have a Pioneer 109 and I just upgraded the firmware to 1.58. The burner seems to be operating ok.
What additional software do you suggest?
Exactly what is " Book Type Settings'?......anyway?

I did my first 2 DVD discs today and they came out pretty good. Chapters were created but the menu to select chapters was missing.
Is that what this is about?

I am also looking to decrease the size of these files so I can put 2 or 3 on a 4.7 GB disc.

Any suggestion?

Book Type or Bit Setting is a way to tell a set top DVD player that the disk is a DVD-ROM instead of a DVD+R. The reason it might be important is if you have or you will ever play your creation on an older DVD player. If you were burning a DVD for Distribution to a client group or something like that, you would want to make sure your DVD was compatible with as many DVD players as you could, therefore you would want the disc set to DVD-ROM.

I looked up your DVD burner and it is not listed as having BitSetting enabled. Do a Google search for "bit setting" or "Book Type" and you should find quite a bit of stuff. There are several threads about bit setting here and some other sites have such information as well.

If you want to go ahead and enable your player but can't find out how, I will try to help. Check sites like http://www.videohelp.com and http://www.cdfreaks.com

Thanks for your info and offer but I really only need these DVD's so I can play them on my player in the front room.
It appears that Book Type or Bit Setting is not important for me.

I would however like to be able to create a "chapter search" item on the opening page of my DVD's. Do you know where I might find something on this?
