Hi,
I was wonder when i backup files when i want to reformat or watever
i just burn them on all my cd-rw or dvd-rw
& i takes and alot of cds!!

is there a comprion format which will wilding compress files,
or a different method or useing backup applications
that might have worked really well for u!!

any advice would be very helpful :)

The cheapest solution imo is...

Buy a harddrive off ebay, or whatever...normally you can get a 160Gb 7200 RPM brand new in the box on ebay for around $70, shipped....that's US, dunno about australia.

Then, you order a "USB 2.0 External Enclosure"...and put the drive inside it. You plug it in, away you go.

A seagate branded external harddrive of the same size goes for about $160-$300 US...so you see my point.

Hard drives come in various speeds, sizes, and cache.

RPM's, revolutions per minute, more is better. 5400 is slowest, 7200 is great, 10,000 isn't worth the money it costs.

Cache size: under 7Mb for a large drive (over 60Gb, really), is bad. 8Mb is good, more is better.

Seek times: are always slower the bigger the drive is. Smaller numbers are better, however, it's the difference between 7.5 and 9 NANO seconds. Think you can tell the difference?


The thing w/ real compression is that it takes a lot of time to PACK stuff, and then a while to UNpack it. Just get a big fat drive, throw it in an external enclosure, and don't worry about it. The nice thing too is that you can turn it off when you don't need it, so it'll last a looooooooooooooooooooong time

My 75gig raptor has faster loading times with games, so to say they are not worth the money is not necessarily the case. It just depends on what you want or expect. I think my drive was/is worth the money. The raptors seek time is 4.5 nano seconds, twice the speed of a 7200. I can see a marked difference in performance over my other HDs.

Meh.

Then there's the argument that the total lifespan of a drive is higher for lower RPM drives.

Raptors tend to have heat problems as well, especially w/o some kind of active cooling.

Besides, I'd rather have 2x the space for 1/2 the money with my big fat 160Gb'ers.

But, to each his own. I'm also quite satisfied w/ my generic memory...
