music from my laptop to a pa

My question is,
When i play music from my laptop and try and plug it into a PA system it only comes out on the left side. im using window media player and when it's not plugged in i can slide the balance left and right and hear the differend channels but when it's plugged in im only getting the left channel. Im using an adapter stereo to stereo
what am i doing wrong. Thanks
