New Nintendo Next-Gen Console Name Revealed - Nintendo Wii

From MAXCONSOLE http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=6880

We received an e-mail on behalf of PR agency Cake (UK) along with a quicktime movie animation, which announces the new name of the Nintendo's next generation console, say bye bye to the Nintend Revolution and hello to Nintendo Wii. The name 'Wii' sounds alot like 'WE' which emphasises the console is for everyone!

This is the new logo for the next generation nintendo console 'Nintendo Wii' - formerly known by it's codename of 'Revolution'.

quote:

Introducing… Wii. As in we. While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.

Wii will put people more in touch with their games… and each other. But you’re probably asking: What does the name mean? Wii sounds like we, which emphasises this console is for everyone.

Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii. Wii has a distinctive ii spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd. So that’s Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it’s really not about you or me.

It’s about Wii.

And together, Wii will change everything.

The folks at www.Gamasutra.com have some more information on the Nintendo Wii hardware -

quote:

In addition, Nintendo has re-iterated the main features of what was formally called the Nintendo Revolution, noting ''a smart, compact design, approximately the size of three standard DVD cases stacked together.'' The company also revealed: ''A variety of prototype colors are being showcased during E3. It will come with a silver stand that makes the system a welcome, artistic component of any multimedia setup, whether it's displayed vertically or horizontally.''

New details on the disc format have also been revealed: Instead of a tray, a single, innovative, self-loading media bay will play both 12-centimeter optical discs used for the new system as well as Nintendo GameCube discs. Owners will have the option of equipping a small, self-contained attachment to play movies and other DVD content.

Once again confirmed is backward compatibility (''The new console plays all games from the current Nintendo GameCube generation''), and downloadable classic titles (''The console also will have downloadable access to 20 years of fan-favorite titles originally released for Nintendo 64, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) and even the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).'')

In addition, it's revealed that a bay for an SD Memory Card will let players expand the internal flash memory. The system boasts 512 megabytes of internal flash memory, wireless controllers, two USB 2.0 ports and built-in Wi-Fi access. A worldwide network of Nintendo players ''can gather to compete in a comfortable, inviting environment.''

Nintendo has officially announced the final name for its Revolution next-gen console, naming it the 'Wii'. According to its official Wii website, the new name for the console "represents the answer", and "will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else."

The site explains: "Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. Finally, according to Nintendo, "the introduction of a number of new franchise properties will add to the world's richest stable of stars, including Mario, Zelda, Super Smash Bros., Donkey Kong and Metroid. Also according to Nintendo, a number of Wi-Fi-enabled launch titles are in development that will employ Nintendo's newly announced wireless gaming service, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Many more details are sure to be announced at E3.

At first I thought it might mean something in Japanese, Ii means good but I don't believe Wii means anything. I have heard some negative feedback about the name, but really I could care less what they call it if it has the innovative gameplay that is not possible on the other systems with their unique controller. Of course they have changed names before, remember the Ultra 64? Or you may know it better by the name Nintendo 64 which they changed it to before the launch.

I don't like the name very much, but I don't see that as much of a problem. There's some weird names for just about everything; so who cares?
Apparently the nunchuk accessory can detect acceleration, so that's pretty cool.

wii-EEEERRD!!! How can they change the name like this, before E3. Hope feedback makes them realize their mistake. Like Sony did after the PS3's infamous boomerang shaped controller was constantly attacked for looking to weird.

Razengan!!!

well obviously it was a code-name. I think most people were surprised of the actual name "wii" itself, not the fact that it was named at all.

But hey, i'd rather have a name (good or bad) than just a few numbers after the word "Nintendo"

and besides, it might catch on. who knows. people aren't always accepting of change, so I'll just give it time.
Actually, who the fuck cares? The name doesn't make the system any more or less fun or entertaining or whatever.

Nintendo Revolution - Awesome name for a system in Europe, Americas.
Nintendo GO - Not THAT bad a name, Nintendo 5, gogogo.
Nintendo WII - They are ASKING for English speakers to make fun of this.

That being said, it's no big deal, as long as they do not deliberately call this system crap, s$%#, or anything that absurd. That, and the name probably will stick with the Jap population moreso than Revolution. Does anyone know if Revolution, when shortened in any way, shape, or form, becomes a Japanese obscenity?

You wa Shock!

Yes, Revolution was obviously a code name. They would never go with a name which is nearly unpronounceable in Japan. My wife is Thai, and she can't say Revolution properly either.

That being said I know they thought the name would draw criticism in the US, that's why it was announced now instead of at E3. They will concentrate on the showing the games and the controllers at E3, not announcing and explaining the name. It could be a marketing ploy, you will have to admit everyone is talking about the name, and the old adage any publicity is good publicity may apply. It could be that the name is more of a pictograph than an actual name. Wiii, the ii representing the 2 unique controllers, 2 people playing, looking at it as a graphic rather than as a word.
