i keep trying to burn dvd data disks. i always get a "disc burning successful" but once nero verifies the data - it gives the notification "data verification failed" 80% of the time.

i've used varying speeds... varying dvds... i dont know what's wrong. please help?

A couple of things i thought of. First, i dont use the data verify much. If you are not writing to a DVD+RW, or doing a multi-session disc, then there isnt much use for it, as Nero will not be able to correct any errors it finds. For movies, i just watch them, or do a quick check for CRC errors by running it thru DVD Shrink, or DVD Info Pro.
With all that said, there is only one main thing wrong i see in that log.

That means the version of Nero you are using cant recognize your drive, so it assigned it a generic listing. The last 6x non-buggy version is 6.6.0.18 and you can find it here:
http://www.filehippo.com/download_nero_burning_rom/tech/?539
It may still get that generic listing with this version, but you get no bugs with it.
Write down your serial numbers, then use the nero cleantool before installing the older 6x version. The clean tool will get rid of Nero listings in your registry.
http://www.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html

Your firmware is up to date.

I cant see anything else bad going on in that log. It might not be the answer you were looking for, but i would just turn off the data verification, or use some program other than Nero to burn data.
The other alternative that might get Nero to recognize the drive is to update to Nero 7.

Anyone else have any ideas, pop in with a post.

Hi lexi_sexy
The Nero serial numbers are the ones you edited out of your burn log. It started with Windows XP 5.1
IA32-XXXX-
I put in the XXXX but those are your serial numbers. I say to write them down as going to different versions of Nero can cause problems sometimes unless a clean tool is used. When you use the cleantool, it will erase everything, including your serial numbers. You can also see the serial numbers in the start smart thing in Nero 7, and i forget where in the version 6. In 7 it is under the burning symbol lower right hand part of startsmart. Clicking on it displays all your Nero serial numbers.
As to the DVD+RW statement i made, once you burn a DVD+R or DVD-R, and finalize the disc, thats it, no more data can be written to the disc. I think a +RW since it is eraseable would be able to correct any data it read wrong in the verify process. On a + or - R once burnt, you cant change anything. So verifying one of those just tells you Nero compaired the data from the source file, and checked it against the burnt file, and found a difference. Here it is in the log.

Sector 424160 on disc has different content to source
Now maybe if its a movie file, you will see a skip or tiling in that bit of information. There is nothing you can do about it other than burning the file again, and you will probably get some error reported back, maybe in another sector or two this time. All burnt DVDS will have some errors. Nothing is perfect there. I would use Nero's DVD/CD drive speed tool and do a check with the Disc Quality tab to see how a burnt disc came out. All you have to do is uncheck one box, and Nero wont report back the failure. You can then run the seperate program to check the quality of your burn, if that worries you, or if you just are curious as to how good of burns you are getting. Anything in the 90% or above is good. Below that, and you might want to try different media, or burn slower or faster. To me, anything from 4x-8x is fine. One of my drives actually produces less errors when burning at 8x instead of 4x.
And im not sure having you go to the older 6x version of Nero will help that generic listing. You might be forced to either go to 7, or get another drive. But since it is working, i would not suggest getting a new drive just to make Nero happy.
