Disappointing... After seeing how well liked this drive was and the impressive scans by some members here, I decided to replace my NEC 3520a, but this thing cannot even produce a disc that gets by Nero's verification stage...

Firmware is stock... BCFC
I did download Qsuite, all options default.

Media: Verbatim 16x DVD+R
Code: MCC-004
Tested Speeds: 4x, 8x, 12x, 16x
All failed

Media: Ridata 8x DVD+R
Code: Ritek R03
Tested Speeds: 4x, 8x
All failed

Media: Imation(They were a gift!) 8x DVD+R
Code: RicohJPN R02
Tested Speeds: 4x, 8x
All failed

I have used all these discs in my NEC with success, so it has to be the drive... Return to newegg and get a replacement? Or, am I missing something here...?

EDIT: Has anyone returned anything to newegg before? Should I expect a hassle?

You should be able to return it to NewEgg without any hassles.

I have a question for you first, what version of Nero are you using? There have been some "buggy" versions out recently and could be the cause of the problems.

The one that I got from Newegg works great. I would seek an exchange. It is an excellent drive.

Cheers.

I'm using Nero 6.6.0.18 Ultra Ed. Works just fine for my NEC.

I ran some of these discs through CD/DVD speed and see a pattern... They do alright at first then crap out at 2.5 and then go back to normal to completion..

Little hard to read, but you get the picture.

Any ideas what might cause it to screw up at the same spot? Also, this is one of my better scans on this thing... :(

Hi,
Nero verification. Just so many reasons why this fails. Try checking ide connections,maybe even change ide cable.
As for the scan goes, the implication is faulty media. However if your saying that this result is identical regardless of media used. Then the fault is likely to lie elsewhere. If you haven't flashed the drive yet, then do so. If you have, then reflash the same f/w, maybe some pc background activity has affected the flashing process. If/when these things have been tried & no difference. Then return drive.

You said it came stock with that firmware? What is the manufacture's date on that drive? The latest that I know of is BCDC with a manufacture date of Feb. That is also the firmware listed on the BenQ driver page. Seems odd that the firmware would be 2 versions ahead in 2 months.

Here's a link for BenQ tech support and a link to the driver section is listed there.

http://www.benq.us/ServiceAndSupport/

Contact them and see if they recommend a return. I'd call rather than e-mail. But that is just me. :)

Also, as zebadee suggested, check the cable. Try a spare cable, if you have one.

Let us know what happens.

Hi,
dolphin2, the f/w is misleading you, BCDC is for the 1655. BCFC is the latest f/w for the 1650. NewEgg have stock of the 1650 with BCFC f/w.

@zebadee
I changed the firmware to the BCFC RPC1 from http://tdb.rpc1.org/#DW1650 and it seemed to fix it. I'm getting 95% quality scores in Nero. Still getting 2000+ PIF though which sucks. :( Atleast it works as well as my NEC 3520a now... Any tips on getting those really low PIF scans?

@Dolphin2
Manufactured in March 2006. It also lists BCFC.

@Draugr

I just flashed mine to the tdb BCFCrpc1 myself. Have not burned with it since, but am planning to tonight or tomorrow. Will let you know how I come out.

Good luck. Hopefully your drive will learn and improve with subsequent burns.

Hi,
The high PIFs seem to be typical of both the 1650 & 1655 at the moment. Updates in f/w will see this fall. In the meantime SolidBurn & WOPC should brings things down a litte. In some cases once SB has settled turning WOPC of produces an improvement. The thing to remember is that every setup is different, so the only true way to find out what's going to work for you is to experiment.
For me with the 8x media that you've got, I found that SB/WOPC enabled OS disabled.
With MCC 004 the same settings (MCC 03RG20 WOPC/OS disabled SB enabled), however if you take these settings. use them as a starting point.
