Backed up Battlefield won't go online!

Ok, about 6 months ago, I backed up my Battlefield game because all my games get really scratched because of other people's ill concern in the house. Well, I recently blew away my HD and upgraded my OS to WINXP Pro. I installed the game from the backups. It worked fine, but would not allow me to go online. I tried using the originals to re-install but was unsuccessful because they are scratched (go-figure). Can anyone tell me why this would not allow me online, but will allow the game to work when installing from backup? Thanks

Are you using the original .exe or a modified one?
If your using a modified executable for the game,
Thats why it wont let you online (im assuming),
Either that or your serial key is rejected or invalid.
(Thats how f.e.a.r and some other games work,
I dont have battlefield 2 to say for sure.)
