Hi guys,

I recently purchased an IBM thinkpad, which includes this burner:
Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-830S.

On the recorder itself it sais DVD/CDRW

Obviously it will burn CDR and CDRW, but will it also burn DVDR and DVDRW? If so, what would the speed be???

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Jeff

It burns DVD, I don't think over 8X if that fast. Matshita(s) are notorious for not burning DVDs very fast. Specs should be in your guide or you may find the info on the support site for the Thinkpad. Make sure your firmware is up to date.

@ Brobear
The ZV6270 I got has a uj-840d drive in it. Personally I think its slow and lousy. I had to reload XP 3 times since I got it 6 mos ago because all of a sudden the drive would play not DVDs without skipping audio and video. I was going nuts trying to figure it out. Once I reloaded everything was fine. I ripped tons of music to a server with it probably over 400. Plus over 100 dvd burns (slow as hell 1x or 2x max).
Last nite it started again and finally I ran nero info tool and lo and behold DMA was turned off on the ATAPI secondary controller channel. I couldnt change it back to DMA mode through normal means, it looked like It changed but the settings would not remain changed once I reopened it. Removing and reinstalling the ATAPI as above got DMA turned back on.
I have searched alot for updated driver but there isnt one I can find (1.02 firmware is stock). And if I fry it I will be not covered under warrantee. I think its just a low end cheap @$$ drive.
Question is, how would I upgrade it? the lappy has a rounded off base and the drive slides into the bottom part of the side and also has a matching rounded front bezel on it. It (bezel) doesnt appear to be detachable. HP website lists no info on parts replacing the drive. I have also called several times to alert them that I was having issues but they wont replace it yet because it will work but just not reliably.
It seems from your reply that you are familiar with the product, how would you replace it if you wanted/had to?
Thanks

Contact some of the hardware vendors to see if they have a replacement; Newegg, mWave, TigerDirect, or some of the others. As an alternative, there's always the external drives. As for the bezel, I'm not sure either. Most of those drives were made to work in different PCs, so the curved bezel may not be part of the drive. Check with someone who knows for sure unless you're handy at taking things apart and putting them back together.
