Hi...

I'm following the Digital Digest's guide to backing up DVD's and I'm going for creating 2 DVD's from the one for the sake of the quality.

The guide says get ifoedit, which I did.

Use DVDdecrypter to get the files onto the hard drive. Which I did.

Point ifoedit at the appropriate file - seems to be video_ts.ifo in this case - and I did that.

Ifoedit loaded it all up with screens of info.

Then it says click on 'split to 2 dvd-r's' on VOB Extras. That menu choice is available on the drop down menu but when I click on it absolutely nothing happens. It is not 'grayed out', it is available.

There are other menu choices, both on the top bar menu and the buttons on the bottom, that do get a reaction and seem to be working fine.

I am running winXP.
Ifoedit is version 0.96

Does anyone have any clues?

Am I using it wrongly?
Is it not compatible with XP?

What?

regards,

ab :)

You have to choose the VTS_ifo file which your main movie is in not the video ifo file.
If you just want to split the movie with no menus I would just use DVDshrink. Use the start/stop function in reauthor mode. It is real simple to use if you don't mind not having menus and you will still be able to advance by chapter. You can split it and have menus with ifoedit but it does take a little getting use to. I split Star Wars 3 using ifoedit but split Titanic with no menus with DVDshrink.

Hi...

thanks for that. I checked what you say and sure enough it seemed to work inasmuch as I've now got a result when I press 'split'. Haven't had time to go further yet.

I'm interested in what you say about doing it with dvdshrink, without menus.

What do I want? Different things at different times.

My old dvd's that are scratched or whatever and I can't copy with anything I've found yet I'd like to rescue whatever I can and just the main movie with nothing else at all would be great.

My new dvd's that I haven't even bought yet I plan to copy in total fidelity and it was a big surprise to me to learn that it just can't be done because we simply can't buy the media. Big surprise. Given that fact I'm determined to go the split dvd route and get the highest fidelity copies I can at the expense of having to put up with two dvd's.

But that's only for the stuff I reckon is really classic, really worth keeping.

For humdrum stuff (e.g. my wife's movies :) ) I'll accept a half way house such as you suggest. It sounds good. She (and myself) don't care about menus or alternate languages or alternate subtitles (though we always want english subtitles - we always use them, I find it the best way to watch a movie nowadays, don't have to strain to hear what they're saying and can play it really quiet and not wake the kids).

So I'll explore that avenue and thanks for mentioning it and if you've got any further input I'd be happy to see it.

regards,

ab

p.s. there's a lot to learn, isn't there? and it comes so slow sometimes. I swear I must have read thousands of words, pages and pages, guide after guide, and it was only a couple of days ago I finally realised that big about there simply are no copies, only quality reduced 50% size reduced or split dvd copies!

IfoEdit is really old tool. It was a pionier but nowdays there are other, way easier to use tools (DvdReMake, Vobblanker, PgcEdit). You can do pretty much anything with the disk content now: split in half, have part of this and part of that, etc. Take a look: http://www.dimadsoft.com/dvdremake/ud_dg_01.php

Thanks for that.

It's not the first time I've been caught with outdated software/information. I should get into the habit of checking the dates of writing of information I read and act upon. I'm often acting upon really out-of-date stuff and as things move faster and faster it gets easier and easier to fall into that trap.

I read your guide and I think it is excellent. I was very interested in your first attempt, with the peanut buttered dvd. You still managed to get a copy of it! How did you do that? I've got dvd's that don't seem damaged at all, and don't run with any signs of damage, but dvdshrink and dvddecrypter won't process them and I'm told it is because they are damaged. There's no peanut butter on them anywhere :)

I try to run only free tools (just deleted lengthy explanation of why - who cares?) and I see you've got to pay for dvdremake. But not much. I'm just not sure that you can't do all that with other tools I've seen and have. All the screens and such seem very much like something I was using (trying to use) the other day. IFOEdit itself, I suppose it was.

Could you spell out the differences? What we can do with dvdremake that we can't do with the others? Whatever it is that makes it worth buying?

Lastly - I see you call yourself Dimad. Does this mean Dimad software is yours? Did you write the programme?

regards,

ab :)

Just to let you know all the programs I use are free. Yes they are outdated a bit but they do what I need them to. I don't know what these other programs wiil do that the ones I use don't but I will check them out, but only the free ones. I don't see the point in buying programs when the free ones will work. But I do plan on checking out vobblanker. I know that DVDshrink will allow me to strip out certain audio and video and keep just what I want.
I would at least try DVDshrink before I go out and pay for something. I have been doing this for 3 years and have not felt the need to buy a program. (unless you want to do some serious video editing)
If all you wanting to do is split movies and strip out the audio and make simple backups I would just stick with the free ones. I will get back with you when I see if vobblanker is any better.
The only place I see you would need the latest software is getting the encrypted files from your DVD to your HD, ( some DVD's have new encryption so you will need updated programs for that). I had to update to DVDfab decrypter for "Fun With Dick And Jane" cause it had the new encrption. After you have unencrypted files on your HD you can use programs like DVDshrink and ifoedit to cut out certain audio and video that you don't want.
