Is it possible to configure Winamp in Win XP Pro (or the OS itself)to accept long file names on files in folders 5 or 6 layers deep?

I have accumulated lots of mp3 files and recently discovered neither Winamp Pro nor Media Player will play tracks with long file names 5 or 6 folder levels down. I get either an error messages or, in Winamp, the file seems to load and it appears in a playlist, but the little timing slider doesn't appear and no music is heard. Checking the file info in Winamp shows the ID tags are blank. (In Windows Media Player, I simply get an error message, and the file will not load.)

I can get these tracks to play properly if I substantially shorten the file name or, alternatively, copy the file to another folder less deep than the original. It appears that the deeper the file, the shorter the name must be to get it to play. I expect it is also dependent somewhat on the number of files on the drive. I am using Win XP Pro and the mp3 files are on a 235 GB USB 2 hard drive.

I was hoping there is some registry value or some parameter in the player one could set to solve this problem. Interestingly, Win XP seems unaffected by the long files in folders many levels deep; I can copy, rename, delete etc. these files with no apparent problem.

Any ideas will be appreciated. One solution is, of course, obvious --shorter file names in folders less deep. That's what I'm doing now. But it may help to know what is going on to produce this odd behavior and how it might be fixed by a more sophisticated approach.
