I. Introduction
II. Frequently Asked Questions
III. DNAS Error Codes

I. Introduction:

Anyone who has played an online game for the Playstation2 console that has to Authenticate DNAS data has wondered, What is this DNAS thing? And if bad luck prevails, later to ask, Why am I getting this DNAS error?, What does it mean? I JUST WANT TO PLAY! - I feel your frustration. Errors received during 'DNAS Authentication' have plagued games/users, and I gathered all available information on Sony's DNAS (You'll learn what it means in a minute), and brought it together in this document.
I have also compiled a list of the most common DNAS errors, their definition, and possible work-arounds. (See section III)
II. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

1. What is DNAS?

DNAS is a network verification system made by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc (SCEI), used in most Playstation2 games with online capabilities. It stands for Dynamic Network Authentication System.
2. What exactly does it do?

DNAS receives information about your Playstation2, including information pertaining to the game you are playing for: Authentication; Copy protection; Account blocking; System rules, or other game management purposes. This is done to verify that you aren't breaking any rules stated in the Online User Agreement, such as hacking or cheating.
3. What online games use DNAS authentication?

Every online game produced after the year 2003 uses DNAS. Games which were produced before this time may not have DNAS.
4. What can cause me to get a DNAS error?

-Improperly configured network settings
-Use of a third-party network adaptor
-Use of a "burned" copy of a game
-Use of a "modded" Playstation2
-Use of a cheat device
-Use of a Playstation2 which is out of date
-Playing on a connection with active firewall or with closed network ports
-Interference from other network equipment
5. What can I do to pass through DNAS Authorization successfully?

Make sure your Playstation2 Network Adaptor settings are accurate and working properly. If the test on your Network Adaptor setup disc failed, your setup is not complete and you will most likely not pass through the DNAS check. Make sure all Network Adaptor settings are correct before connecting, and read the Unofficial Network Adaptor FAQ or the Playstation.com NA wizard to troubleshoot.

Make sure you are using the Official Network Adaptor (Ethernet/modem)(for PlayStation2). Other unofficial network adaptors, such as the Go-Net or Linksys adaptors are not supported by DNAS.

Make sure you are using a full retail version of the game. DNAS will not allow users with copied, or burned games to connect.

Make sure you are using an original legitimate Playstation2. DNAS does not allow modded Playstation2's to connect.

Make sure you do not have any cheat devices connected. DNAS can detect the presence of cheat devices such as GameShark, Codebreaker, and Action Replay. Whereas any cheat device is connected, DNAS will not allow you to connect.

Although this cannot be determined from physical appearance, make sure your Playstation2 Console is compatible with DNAS. Past users with incompatible Playstation2 Consoles received DNAS errors during the authentication screen including (but not limited to) -880 or -881. If this is the case, you must call SCEA Consumer Services at 1-866-466-5333, or 1-800-345-7669 between the hours of 6:00am - 7:00pm (Pacific Standard Time) to receive a replacement Playstation2 Console.

Make sure the internet connection your Playstation2 Console with Network Adaptor (Ethernet/modem)(for PlayStation2) is not behind a firewall or has any closed network ports. DNAS requires certain ports to be open for successful authentication.

Make sure your Playstation2 has a good, sturdy connection. Additional traffic on a shared internet connection may result in a slow connection to the DNAS servers. Try ensuring no other PCs, etc. are generating undue traffic while diagnosing DNAS issues. In some instances, other machines on a shared internet connection may be generating too much traffic for DNAS requests to flow correctly.

6. How do I open ports for a firewall or router, so DNAS can connect?

This is explained in tcampb01's Unofficial Network Adaptor FAQ. (DMZ host is the preferred and easiest method. This will create an open connection for your Playstation2.)
For specific game port requirements, refer to the game's manual or developers website. It should be documented there.
In some instances, users had conflicts with firewalls which were the responsibility of their ISP. Any such issues must be taken up with your ISP.
7. Nothing you said here fixes my problem... What should I do?

If you receive a message during login identifying a DNAS authentication error and you're ripping your hair out in frustration, please write down the exact error code number, and contact SCEA at 1-866-466-5333 or 1-800-345-7669 between the hours of 6:00am - 7:00pm (Pacific Standard Time).

It's not cool to rip off other people's guides, especially when they have copyrighted and you leave out the credits

You will have to totally re-vamp it if you are going to release it as a guide.

I have a modded PS2 but my chip turns itself off for online games. How common is this feature these days? I also was planning on adding a usb hdd to my ps2 and was wondering if it is in any way possible to get online with that. That's some useful info PeterG969, thanks.

And who says I download PS2 games? Don't presume anything. Breaching copyright & slander in the same topic? Really off to a good footing with the law. lol

As for contacting Sony about generating DNA$ IDs, why didnt you ask permission from them about copying & pasting their guide, above, while you were at it? You were on the phone with them anyway, so it wouldnt of cost any extra would it?
You really expect me or anyone else reading this to believe you contacted Sony about distributing DNA$, when you're the one that's just breached their copyright? lol

you actually need to pay to talk to sony.I only actually phoned them up at comet cause my laptop was not working then once the guy at the desk went away then i asked him.I dont actually think sony is that bothered since they allready dropped the price of their console down to £70 and they know they can make their money from the allmighty ps3.
