The problem I have is when I play the file, the audio and video are not in sync with each other. What is a good easy to use software to use. I have tried several but dont see an option to sync audio and video, please help.

TMPGEnc is an easy to use encoder but slow and only encodes VCD. For SVCD or DVD, TMPGEnc Plus is necessary but not free. Both versions are lousy at encoding audio, so convert the audio to wav and enter that separately using this method (free) or Goldwave (shareware):http://www.videohelp.com/virtualdubaudio.htm Here is a guide for VSO ConvertXtoDVD.
I don't think it converts to MPEG but this would be my choice:http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/vso_convertxtodvd_guide.cfm. There is also WinAvi.

I still dont understand. Maybe because I am trying to convert old home movies that I converted from VHS C to DVD R and am now trying to convert that to MPEG 2.

Sorry, I won't be of any help to you. I know nothing of converting home movies or VHS. I am probably wrong but if the DVD R is out of sync, I don't know if converting that to MPEG 2 would be better.

None of the tools I suggested will do what you want. I have no experience with this but look at DVD to MPEG: http://www.shareup.com/dvd-to-mpeg.html, DVD Ripper:http://www.dvd-ripper.biz/dvd-to-mpeg.htm, DVD to MPEG Converter:http://www.topshareware.com/Max-DVD-to-MPEG-Converter-download-61...

Strange, the first 2 links don't work. Just do a search if interested. DVD to MPEG looks as if it may work. Duh, the commas at the end of each link aren't part of them.
