Have you changed the switch to enable at the back to enable it as slave or master as I had the same problem with 2 DVD rewriters, turned out I had them both set on Master.

My MSI board came with a floppy that had to be loaded before SATA drives would work. A MSI user site spelled it all out, possibly a site for ASUS users would have the info you need.

On my Asus P4C800-E Deluxe motherboard, if I want to use SATA, in my BIOS, I have to switch Enhanced Mode Support to On, to use the SATA drives.

I don't know if the newer Asus motherboards have to be changed manually in the BIOS.

Life is good!

GrandpaBW, is that a smaller sig photo? No offense but it's about time, I read thru AD at school, and I get people giving me strange looks and "what, you're looking at picture of little kids, uggghhh!". Don't mind though, free speech and all that!

I agree with you though, there are options in the BIOS that have to be enabled before S-ATA drives are recognised.

It's been a while since I did, but even though SATA is a faster connection, nicer cord, and no master/slave problems, doesnt it still have to have a format and partition? I know it will be recognized in the BIOS even if it is not, just tossing something out there that hasnt been mentioned.

Yes but what would be the point in buying a hard drive if you couldn't partiton or format it?

If the motherboard first recognized the sata drive and now it does not it could be the sata data connector. Most new motherboards come with two of them. Try the other one and make sure it is well seated on both ends.

@paul1085---There wouldnt be a point in buying it. Even though a HD is plugged in and recognized in BIOS doesnt mean windows can use it yet. It needs set up in windows or else it wont be seen. Maybe it was already done, we dont know, it wasnt mentioned, just throwing out information that hasnt been mentioned yet.

first off SATA you don't have to configure the jumpers for master or slave drive.Go to your bios and disable IDE and enable SATA.run your mobo disc on second computer to get SATA drivers on a floppy if you don't already have one.Enter drivers with F6 on windows installment.

Is it crap or is it memorex?

S-ATA cables can sometimes be a problem. I think Western Digital's solution is a good one, though you obviously already have the cables you need.

I wondered about that - what was the brand of the old & new cables? People could do with avoiding cables like those, it's not what people immediately think of as a problem.
