Hi all
I just bought a benq 1650 from newegg.com (OEM) with an external usb enclosure. I hooked everything up and plugged it into my laptop running xp and it was recognized as benq 1650. Now, when i put a cd/dvd in it and attempt to open it, it takes
a) a very long time to open
b) won't open the files, just the folders after a painstaking wait
c) stops the "My Computer" explorer window from responding.
I havn't tried burning with it yet, since i couldn't get it to read, I was wondering if this problem could be related to the enclosure or if my drive is faulty.
Any help would be appreciated:)

Hi,
The 1650 is not really set up for external use as yet. Ideally need the right f/w. For the longer view take a look at the threads already recommended. Short term if your lucky changing f/w may go some of the way to resolving things for you. (I can't remember which (f/w), but I know that another user had a simialr problem. Changing f/w worked for them).

i would never buy a 'ready-made' external burner, just a plain ole' burner and a decent USB2.0 enclosure. i've got a couple Belkin enclosures and they work a treat with any burner i slap in them..

i just mean i wouldn't pay extra for these standard external burners. i just buy standard burners and use them in a standard USB2.0 enclosure, i just like to do my own thing :)

oh hang on (doh!) i just re-read your original post again. sorry i hadn't read it properly, thought you had a standard external burner there.
Anyways, not all USB2.0 enclosures' chipsets work as well as they might. There's an epic thread here at Afterdawn chock-full of problems with USB2.0 burning.. i just got lucky, the enclosures i have are awesome, but not everyone has such good success with them... i guess not all USB chipsets are created equally...

I bought the burner and an enclosure, i didn't get a ready made external. My enclosure is a Macally phc-500B. I put my hdd in the enclosure and it works, so the problem must be with the burner. I'll try changing the firmware and if it doesn't work, i'm going to send it back.

ok...however it still may just be the enclosure; these enclosures of mine don't work very well with hard drives, flaky to say the least. yet they've always been bulletproof with burners, think i've had them 2 or 3 years now. ps you have to set the jumpers on hard drives and burners to MASTER in enclosures, as far as i'm aware they are ALL like that..just something to check

creaky,
so you're saying the problem could be with the enclosure even though i can see the files in the cd/dvd i put in the burner? i was so sure there was something wrong with the burner...

if you haven't got access to a PC to mount the Benq internally, i guess you'd best try swapping it (the Benq) for another. However i would consider swapping the enclosure also..

Hi,
As I tried to point out in my earlier post the 1650 is picky to say the least with current f/w in working at all with caddies. Try a different f/w for the 1650. Check & if possible flash caddie too. It's more likely that you'll end up needing to swap the caddie & keep the drive.
