If the file ends with .AVI, then it's AVI. The most likely reason for it saying DVD AC3 is that the audio is the original AC3 format file used on the DVD. If the file is longer than 1hr30min and the file is bigger than 700MB, then it would most likely have an AC3 audio track. If you're not completly sure after this, then download a program called AVIcodec:

Just burn it to a CD if you're going to back it up, but you'll need a DVD Player that supports whatever format the video's encoded with. Use AVIcodec to check if it's DivX, XviD, or something else, and write back when you find out.

Well, sometimes it can say that a file is unsupported in AVIcodec, but you can still play it because you have a substitute, like FFDShow for DivX/XviD formats.

I'm not really a fan of going from DivX to DVD, so I'm not entirely sure what to do here. There are other programs you could use, but I don't remember any of them.

Just click the first link in my signature to go to the aD Buddies IRC chat room, make a nick and ask around in there. Or you can do a search in the forums for converting xxxx to MPEG2 or DVD.

I hate FFDShow, it didn't work on 'my' PC, which is not mine but of my job's owner, (probably because I hadn't the necessary authorizations to use it). I uninstalled it and I usually use original codecs (which are free, for decoding purposes).
Otherwise dowanload from the net that .dll(s) and copy it in C:\Windows\System (or the AVI movie's directory, from which FFDShow is called, or in \FFDShow install directory), if you manage to make FFDShow to work (I didn't, since I'm not an administretor in my Window XP computer)

(S)VCD have MP2 audio 44.1 kHz, not AC3 48 kHz. AC3 is supported only by DVDs (toghether with MP2 [48 kHz], MP2 is also often called 'video-CD audio' because, apart for the sampling rate, coincides with it, as compression type [MPEG Layer II]). Extract the AC3 stream from the AVI with ViruialDubMod (Stream___Stream List__Demux), convert that AC3 48 kHz (more likely, 384 kbps) stream to MP2 44100 Hertz 224 kbps with FFMPEG GUI , then multiplex the MP2 to the video created by your encoder (by encoding the AVI, and which be very likely, a 'mute' MPG or a M1V/M2V mpeg video).
Obviously you need to have an AVI to MPEG ancoder....
