Have an Athlon 64 3400+ desktop with a Toshiba SD-R5372 D/L DVD-CD r/w drive which has worked OK up until recently. I've ensured XP Sp2's drivers are current and that the 5372's firmware is up-to-date (7/05). The drive was installed new in 8/05 when I put this system together so it's relatively new. An ASPI layer exists and Adaptec's "ASPIchk" shows that ASPI is not installed correctly, yet Nero's InfoTool says that the "system" ASPI checks out OK. So there's one conflict. Anyway, what happens is, whenever I try to write (drag/drop) to a CD/RW or erase a CD/RW, it gets down to the last 5 seconds (on the wizard) and then just halts. The drive's activity light stays on constantly. After about 4-5 minutes, the wizard gives up with: "An error has occured". The system is not hung at this point, though Explorer is bogged way way down. When I tell the wizard to eject the disk, nothing happens for another 4-5 minutes and the wiz simply disappears. I have to hit the eject button at that point. I tried writing one small file to a CD/RW using Nero 7 with one of several failed CD/RWs. Nero said it would erase it, I agreed and Nero went through. I then tried to write the one small file but Nero said the disk was not empty and would erase it (it already did a minute ago). The error log states the write failed due to "an illegal disc". Not very descriptive... I did save the log file on this Nero session, if that would help someone help me figure out what's going wrong here. BTW, the same thing is happening with DVD RWs.

OK, next question: Is it the media? I've used three different brands with the same results. Now, also, if I take the CD RW's and reintroduce them to the drive, the drive winks about 15-20 times, then the light stays lit constantly and nothing else happens. I have "atuo-run" turned on for all media types, but nothing appears. Dbl-clicking on the drive in Explorer results in a message begging me to insert media as though the drive was empty.

So, I guess I need to ask for opinions as to whether this appears to be a hardware related issue (has the drive gone bad after only 9 months or so) or is this an ASPI or other software related issue? I've read all kinds of conflicting and confusing articles about how to remove ASPI and the related hair-raising disasters some folks have run into with removing it. But if I have to, I will.

Thanks for any input, please.
