I just got my swap magic yesterday and I'm loving it, so far it's worked with all the backed up games I've tried.
However, when I start Swap Magic it won't always load on the 1st try. Sometimes it takes 3-4 resets for it to work.
Did I get a defective disk, or is this just something that happens? It's a bit of a PITA to deal with.

Nah, It could be the ps2 lens, or the DVD back up is having trouble, When I use Swap Magic with my slimline, it works everey go, but on my bulkier ps2, it keeps saying PS2 Not Valid Disk or Disk can not be read.

PS2 Slimline + Swap Magic + Fan
PS3 60gb Version 1.90
PSP 3.52 M33 EUR Black Version + Logitech Hard Case + Logitech 3 Sound Speakers + 2gb Sony Memory Stick
Nintendo Wii + 3 Wii&Nunchuck Controllers
NDS Original + M3 Simply + 1gb Kingston MicroSD
NDS Lite + M3 Simply + 2gb Sandisk MicroSD

Thats funny I'v had my bulky PS2 for four years and its only refused to read Final Fantasy IX for PS1, cleaned the laser and havn't had any trouble since, meanwhile my brother has had his PS2 for a year and it already stopped reading PSX and PS2 CD until I adjusted the laser height.

My suggestion to you is if the problems persist follow this handy guide.

I used to use SM 2.0 and everything loaded great, first try. I upgraded to 3.6 and the very first time I put it in my chunky PS2, it gave me the Disk Read Error. Little laser cleaning and everything has worked fine since. I've also since switched to the flip top mod because I cant help but think that using the slide tool messes up the laser positioning and leads to premature burnout of the PS2.

There seems to be low quality sm 3.6 disks being sold lately. I answered a question the other night about not getting the boot screen and just having to swap when the disk stopped. Upgraded to coder, works fine. It is not console specific.

my SM 3.6 disc works 50/50.

it always displays the swap magic screen but I can hear the the laser clicking and struggling sometimes.

when that happens i just reset because I know it wont boot my back up.

after another couple tries and a few wipes of the disc and it works.

blzert if your using a fliptop you need to make sure that the disc is underneath the latch at the back of the PS2 its pretty hard to explain but once you have a good look you'll understand, if that doesn't work then looks like your laser will need a good scrub (did I say scrub I meant gentle clean).

Icepeten how the hell can you associate cleaning your PS2 laser with the phrase:

@paul, I use the slide tool.

to be honest I think I just have a dodgy press.

When I first got the discs there seemed to be one or two bad looking scrapes (not the actual data rings).

Its ok tho, its more like 7/10 times it works first time.

I'll maybe buy new discs when a new version of SM is released.

It used to load every time for me,but now it takes a few tries sometimes.

I dont think its the laser though since every single original game boots up right away.

Before I got the fliptop sometimes I found that if I open up the drive and then put the swap magic in then it starts acting up but if you press the reset button when the tray is open with the swap magic in it boots every time.
