I know this may sound redundant and stupid, but I am a newbie to burning games. I need to ask a few questions about this. I have the thin ps2, do I need a mod chip to play back up games? And the second question is, I downloaded Dragon Quest VIII's ISO for a torrent and wanted to know if I should use this guide to make it into a game, if not then what should I do? Please don?t bash me too hard about the questions I just asked. Thank you guy!

Yes. Otherwise your next option is swap magic, http://www.swapmagic3.com for more information on this.

Use DVD Decrypter to burn the ISO. Here's the steps:
1) Go to Mode:ISO:Write
2) Select the ISO file from File:Browse
3) Set the speed to 4x MAXIMUM (you can burn at a lower speed - which is what I usually do). The speed can be set at the bottom right of the dialog (where it says "Write Speed")
4) Burn the game onto a DVD (the big button at the bottom left, the one with a HDD, an arrow pointing to a disc, and a disc saying DVD)
Remember to use good media such as Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Sony etc, and use DVD-R, avoid 16x discs as a lot of people have problem with them, I use Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R and don't have any problems with burning games.
Now for the bashing... :P please do a search before you post a question, all these can be found in the forum with a bit of searching, but I feel nice today and hence the answers :) Hope that's all you need to know to play backup games

Swap Magic or it's kind with magic keys, for the PS2two, slimline. Chipping is not for everyone. Your not the only one. Just search and learn.

I just burned Dragon Quest VIII and I am having 2 problems. One, I have to start the game in NTSC mode, and every time I select Normal the screen flutters and it is in black and white and if I select NTSC a small portion of my screen is cut off at the bottom, why is this. Two, I use to own this game and I have it saved it on my memory card but my new back game will not read it and I have to start a new game. Is there a way to continue play my old game or do I have to just start all over?

is your system NTSC or PAL?
Usually screen cut off is when playing games from other regions.
And it should have no problem with your saved game, it's the same game and when using Swap Magic it tricks the PS2 into thinking it is the original. I have back up plenty of them and the game saves will load right up.
Have you tried setting it to PAL instead of NTSC just for kicks
or even tried pressing square instead of X to load it using the special boot function?

I'd be willing to be the game itself is in PAL. As mentioned above, the black and white, scrolling or cut off screen is usually a result in the wrong refresh rate for your system. Even tho the torrent may have said NTSC, it probably wasnt. Unfortunately, torrents arent always reliable to be exactly what they promise.
If you have Isobuster, open up the DQ8 iso in it and look for a file that either says SLUS, SLES, or SCUS. There's one more that escapes me right now. If it says SLES, its PAL and unfortunately, you probably are gonna have to start fresh. I haven't had very good luck converting PAL to NTSC and making games come out all that well. Nothing a quick trip to Blockbuster cant cure though. =)

Hey guys I know this is a really dumb question but its on topic. I know enough about computers just know jack about ps2 hardware. I recently bought a DVDRW, it works great I've been burning wide open.
Now my only question is this. Is it ABSOLUTELY essential that I use either a modchip or the swap disc method? Normally I wouldn't question about this sort of thing, however all the NTSC DVD's that I've burnt work on my ps2 no problems at all.
Now If I was to try this on my other ps2 the original model that came out (I have no idea of the model no.) it wouldn't work. My other ps2 wouldn't play any cds other than ps1 and ps2 games. Not even DVDs. Thats why I got the new flat one.
Therefore it sparks somewhat of an interest when I can put in my burnt DVD and have it play on my ps2.

NTSC DVD videos, or DVD games?
Are you sure your new PS2 isn't chipped when you bought it and you just don't know about it? Yes swap magic or modchip is required to play burnt games, be it CD or DVD

NTSC DVD movies, I've burnt a few and they all work no problem at all which I find pretty odd. And unless Sony started putting Modchips in their new 2006 models, then I highly doubt it lol I got it brand new from the stroe.

I don't see what's so odd about it. The reason you can play the movies is because there are no protections on the DVD videos. For DVD games, there's a protection code which you can only get onto the disc by pressing the disc, which is what industries do, but you can't do that with a DVD burner.

oh ok I understand. Well that sucks lol now I gotta go spend more money on the swap discs lol. I think that would be the wiser decision seeing as how I dont want to mess up my warantee this time around by taking my ps apart. Thanks a lot guys. Really appreciate the help :).

yeah, no mod neded for movies.
Games have an area called the BCA (Burst Cutting Area) that no DVD burner can copy which is what the mods are needed for games. Like above they are pressed discs and not written to.

ahh, thats pretty smart on their side lol, good for them haha. Quite frankly I'd do the same thing lol. If there any way to manipulate the motherboard without actually buying the hardware eg swapdiscs modchip etc.

Another thing too, I dont think the original PS2 games are compatible with the PS2 Greatest Hits. Because I had an original version of San Andreas, it got all messed up and when I got the Greatest Hit's version my saved game wasn't compatible, it made me start a new game.
I just looked on both cases (kept the other game too) and they're both NTSC

None of those say they are for saved games or to convert saved games. I looked on this form as well and can't find it no where.
