Is it possible to use a variation of Swap Magic to play backed up PS2 games for Slimline edition? If not is am I going to have to find a modchip?

Either. I'm assuming it won't work becuse of the disc tray thing.

The discs will work, the tools no. Could always do the tape and tissue mod if you don't want to spend that $5 or so buying the right tools for the slim PS2 (http://swapmagic3.com for more info on this)

correct, Swap Magic will work on either system. It is just the toold needed for swapping that are different.
With the slimline you can use either an aftermarket fliptop
or a set of tools Slimtool/Magic Switch/Ghost Switch

Ah, ok. So now I have another question. If someone downloads the Swap Magic data from the interenet etc. If I burnt it to a disc would it be compatible with a PS2?

Yes, Swap Magic is only for PS2.
But unless you have an original bought copy of Swap Magic to load the copy you downloaded then you are out of luck.
Unless of course you are like me and took the high road and got a good modchip, which loads back ups without needing a swap disc.
But of course then you would not need Swap Magic in the first place.
