Sorry the above link was for code 31, code 39 seems a bit simpler to fix...

Code 39
Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

Recommended resolution

Reasons for this error include a driver that is not present; a binary file that is corrupted; a file I/O problem, or a driver that references an entry point in another binary file that could not be loaded.

Uninstall the driver, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall or upgrade the driver.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the Troubleshooting Wizard.

my point is I need to download the drivers
since the ones that I have are corrupt
I can't find any but I know they're out there

I tried google using this phrase[HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GSR8162B driver]
I couldn't find a match for either 1.

http://www.rpc1.org

But I don't see your firmware there....the driver that the troubleshooter is talking about isn't firmware, it might be your ASPI layer is corrupt. Try here: http://aspi.radified.com/

Thx but late last night I fixed it.
I went into the registry and deleted
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} [the lower filter]

then I reboot the computer
and Presto my CD/DVDs drives were back.

once again thank you.

I hate to say this but I'm not computer illiterate.the
I've never had a driver problem before and I was confused by the fact that I couldn't find drivers that I needed.

By the way I'm using a voice to speech program. That's why you might see words in the wrong place. [Im still getting it configured]

LOCOENG just curious what programs do you use for maintenance/protection on your computer?

ouch....I'm sorry to say but Norton is super sensitive at least its firewall and antivirus. Their utilities are great.

Use Symantec AntiVirus
Symantec makes Norton products
but Symantec works much better, especially the corporate addition.

get CCleaner excellent program and its safe.
go to the site for info.
www.ccleaner.com
for spywhere [Spybot - Search & Destroy] and [adaware]
and for an excellent browser [Mozilla Firefox]

I guess I didn't give the whole story...

I also use Spybot Search and Destroy, FireFox, and Adaware SE.
