i just got a new slim ps2 and my backup disks wont play right anymore. I use my swapmagic disk with it and the games load and play fine at first but after awhile the ps2 can't read the data anymore. Is there anything i can do to correct this problem?

It would definitely play a part in this problem! Do you have a slimline? If so, you could be overheating.

Cheap media doesn't have the protective layers that higher grade media does, therefore you end up losing data integrity on the disk itself. ALL media, over time will degrade into a non-usable form (coaster) but the quality of the media will determine how much time it will take.
Additionally, as mentioned before, the slimlines can overheat, but I would think that you would start to see problems with your games while playing them, not on first boot up.

Well sounds to me like you're using such cheap media that the laser is struggling to read them and gets so hot it over heats itself...
try different media Maxell , Sony, TDK , Ty's , Verbs
Look for Made in Japan on the label (well except the ty's and Verbs) and burn no faster than 4x... Also alot of people have been having issues with 16x media so stay away from it.. PS2's don't care for it...
Does the PS2 make any noises when reading the games? If so it's another indication that it doesn't like the media...
I wonder if someone has made a better cooling fan for the Slim PS2
EDIT: Look low and behold a PS2 Fan Thread

I agree that the cheaper media is a problem. I have seen this first hand and as the old saying goes, "You get what you pay for!!!" Don't be cheap and try saving 10 or 20 cents a disc when, for the little extra, you can get top quality media which should last for many years to come. LOL!!!

I've run into this same problem on my v7 PS2. I've tried using Ritek 16x DVD+R media at speeds between 4x and 16x as well as Verbatim 8x DVD-R with speeds down to 2x. I'm using an NEC 3500A DVD burner. I've never had problems with media degrading for other applications (DVD video, data DVD burning, etc). Can anyone offer any advice?

some slims are known to overheat,if you have a small fan,try putting that near it to cool it down, see if that improves it

I suppose it might be a laser issue as I am starting to get a few DRE errors on pressed PS2 games... it's a very, very small number of times that happens, though, and once the game boots up I've yet to have any stability issues (except for backups). I don't think it's consistent enough to try adjusting the laser as I might wind up making it worse.
