some backup copies of movies I made used to play on my pc and my tv's dvd player. now some will no longer play on my pc. they still play on my tv's dvd player. the original store bought copies still work on my pc. i used dvd decriptor to copy them and i use nero showtime to play them.

to me it sounds like a software issue but i cant figure out what?

i have a plextor PX-716A and i get a "drive not ready error"

fuji (made in japan) discs are ok, but memorex have been known to cause issues & could be the problem, i was using some store brand (comp usa) dvd's when i first started backing up my dvd's & now a lot of them wont play in my pc, some dont even play in stand alone player.

i wouldn't think it is a pc/software issue but more likely the media.
(you could try using windows media player & see if they will play in that, this will confirm/eliminate a software issue with Nero showtime.)

taiyo yuden, verbatim, sony (made in japan) are at the better end of the media scale :-)

i have had both fuji and memorex all of a sudden stop playing on my pc. these are dvd's with no scratches and only a couple months old.

i tried playing in windows media player with no luck either. does not detect the disk.

it doesn't matter if the media is only a few months old if it is of very low quality. that stuff is bottom of the barrel, mate. try verbatim or taiyo yuden. at the very least, make sure whatever you get is stamped "made in japan" if you're getting it in a store somewhere. if you're getting them online, search for the media codes.

online, i would recommend www.newegg.com, as that's where i get my media. if you do a search for dvd media, you'll find many threads with good advice.

and nope, i'm not in australia--i'm based out of missouri :-)

Verbatim can be found in local stores but they are made in taiwan and are the only taiwan made media I recommend. You can also look for sony, fuji, or maxell all made in japan. Some other good online stores are supermediastore, rima, and meritline.
