Asus DRW-1608P2s not recognizing media

I have an Asus DRW-1608P2S, and it will not recognize any blank media. I have tried verbatim -R dvd5 media, and Verbatim dual layer +R media. I have updated to the latest firmware version 1.39 and still no luck. In device manager the computer recognizes the device, and says it is working properly. Has anyone experienced this problem with this drive.
