I'm going to receive a set of SwapMagic discs & a PS2 slidetool in a few days. My PlayStation2 is somewhat old (I'm quite adroit at fixing PS2 DREs now -.-) and I don't believe it will read disks identifying themselves as DVD+R. The only media I have on-hand at the moment is my spindle of Verbatim 16x DVD+R(MCC04) & Taiyo Yuden 16x DVD+R (TYG03). My burner is an NEC 3540 with recent firmware. If I use DVD Decrypter to set my booktype for +Rs to DVD-R(OM), would you say these discs should work in my PS2? EDIT: Found the remnants of a spindle of Verbatim MCC02 8x -Rs lying around! Those should be good right?? :-D

Also, I read that the PS2 is very sensitive to any errors on the disk, and that burning these types of media at half-speed may actually lower the number of errors. How well-founded are those claims? Thanks!!

If you booktyped it you would booktype it as DVD-Rom, not DVD-R
Then it would be in the same format as the original PS2 games.
If that doesn't work then i would say to go out and get some good 8X DVD-R discs.
16X is not know for being real great to do back up games with, but since you have the TY & Verbatim laying around it is worth a try or two.
The Verbatim 8X DVD-R on the other hand should work well. Burn them at 4X to start and see how it works.
burning at half the speed the disc is rated for is standard.
Both burners i have had do this automatically. Like i can set it to 1X on DVD Decrypter, but when you look at the actual speed in the info box it was around 3.8X
not sure you need this but here is a DVD Decrypter tutorial

Thanks for the response! :) Yeah, that's what I figured about the booktype. Wasn't sure though, so I wrote out DVD-R(OM) but the (OM) got wordwrapped so it wasn't entirely clear. Is DVD Decrypter the preferable way of burning games? I was planning to just burn them w/ Nero 7 like I burn everything else...

If you want to booktype with that 3540 you will need some 3rd party firmware.Try Liggy and Dees firmware, its great.

Booktyped +Rs are probally the best since they are the same format as Original games.

Thanks for the link... the Verbatim 8x DVD-Rs were working very well for me though, so I'll probably stick with them. However, my PS2 started acting up, and I can't really do much of anything now. >_> Thread here - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/345498
