I've been having problems with my burner for a short while now and with the help of members on the site i have found out that i need to flash my drive to a true NEC drive again. I updated my original firware a while ago to this version Recorder: <_NEC DVD+-RW ND-2510A> Version: 205D and i had no problems burning with it until recently. Also, i believe my machine has an OEM drive which might be causing probs also. I have tried looking on the Packard Bell (my pc maker) website for an update but they have nothing for 2510A and only an update for 3500?

Since then i have tried everything to update this version to a new one and tried various ones as well but i always get the message back:

'Target NEC nd-2510A is not found correctly'

I was wondering 2 things:

1) Can i flash back to my original drive (which was the one i had when i got the machine, version 254) and is this quite a risky thing to do? I'm not really that confident of doing it, so if anyone could give me step-by-step that might be easier.

2) Does anyone know of any true NEC version i can flash to from this current one? I've exhausted all possibilities!! I've read i can use binflash which seems really complicated??

I've also got problems with updating my aspi file, could this be related to the problem i'm having with the burner? I've downloaded the aspi file and unzipped but its still not recognised when i burn. Also, the initial problem i had when burning was a write error but the last one i did was a power calibration error? So i'm really confused. My last burn log is below. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated as my burner has been out of commission for several weeks now.

Looks like you've flashed to a Dell oem, sorry cant help you with that one.
Quote:
15:23:57 #24 CDR -1106 File Writer.cpp, Line 311
Power calibration error
Heres what my source says in relation to this error
Quote:
Cause:

Power Calibration is controlled by the recorder.

Before any write operation, all recorders must do a 15 step power test to determine the optimum power for writing to the CD; this is called "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC). During the write, it continues to do this test to get the best write throughout the whole CD; this is called "Running Optimum Power Calibration" (ROPC).
This whole process is controlled by the recorder, though initiated by programs such as Nero. There is an area on the inner part of the CD for the test and test data info to be stored. You can use this area up to 999 times.

If you receive the "Power calibration error" or "Power calibration area is (amost) full" error message, the cause will be either poor media, poor power, or a defective recorder.

Solution:

This error can be caused in conjunction with some (cheap) medias, try to burn them alternative with lower speed or switch to another brand of discs.

If you cant solve this error by using recommend medias, pls. try out these steps , if they fail, drive is defect, you should claim it immediate to your dealer.

Update the firmware of your recorder. Please check the manufacturer's website for the latest version.

It is recommend that device should be connected to secondary IDE port as master. Dont use fast ATA 133/166/233 and 266, unit should connected with delivered UDMA-2 cable(40pin)

Try different configurations, such as taking the CD-ROM to the primary IDE bus as slave and have only the recorder connected to the secondary IDE bus as master.

First deinstall all your burnersoftware(s), also clean registry*.
(*it is recommend to use cleaning tools from NERO:
General Clean Tool http://www.nero.com/en/631940828445001.html
Registry Checker and DriverClean tool http://www.nero.com/en/631938356417810.html
InCD Clean Tool http://www.nero.com/en/631938356212815.html
Nero 5 Clean Toolnero clean tool http://www.nero.com/en/631938364095950.html )

Install actual mainboard driver (Busmaster/ Chipset driver). Contact in this case manufacturer of your mainboard. For test you can also try to burn without DMA mode, ( only possible under Windows XP and Windows 2000 ) in the device manager - "IDE ATA/ ATAPI controllers", you can switch from DMA to PIO mode. Pls. notice: If problems caused by NFORCE Chipset drivers, you should better reinstall MS standard IDE drivers.

More than one installed burnersoftwares can cause problems (**some softwares replace ASPI driver by their own! ) so install only one, especially actual trial release of NERO [ http://www.nero.com ] and check burn project again.

**If needed, install actual ASPI Driver (contact manufacturer of your burnersoftware e.g. www.nero.com )

Use our recommended medias , with other medias there`s no guarantee, they will be written correctly and with maximum speed.

For Problems with InCD, pls. contact Nero support. Be informed device works only with InCD, Mt.Rainier (e.g. directCD) is not supported.

You can deactivate for test (only with Windows XP) "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", go to menu "start" > "settings" > "administration" > "services", search "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service", rightclick and deactivate "starttyp".

I would say you probably get the problem with the drive straighteded out. You say you get error messages when you try to flash the drive, but you don't mention how you are trying to flash it. Have you gone to NEC and looked there for a firmware update?

i used the NEC website to try and update and followed the instructions but thats when i was getting the 'target drive not found' message.

I'm really at a loss at what to do next? I've checked out the cdfreaks site and they have info on changing your drive after it has been modified from the original, but i really want to get rid of the version i have?

@gwendolin - i'm unsure as to how my machine (packard bell) allowed me to flash a Dell OEM?

I reflashed my drive with an altered firmware so I could do bitsetting. Check out the page below and you will probably have to use another utility to flash it to get where you want. When you have done that, we can probably help with the rest.

I have a NEC 3550A and I used Binflash, it isn't as complicated as it seems. Go to CDFreaks and go to Nec Firmwares, it is pretty automatic, just click on the one that pertains to your NEC burner. Make sure you use the one that is rpc1, I believe that is what it says, just dont use the other one. When you do the dump save it to your computer incase something should go wrong, but I am a newbie and have done it twice. So Good Luck and let me know how it goes. The Binflash is in my Signature.

I entered your burner details and this is what I got
Quote:

NEC ND-2510A - 2.05, 2.06 / 2.15, 2.16, 2.17, 2.18 / 3.26 (Iodata OEM) / 2.96 (fujitsu OEM) / 2.F7, 2.F9 (Mad Dog OEM) / 205C (Dell OEM)
Version 2.15 is the same as 2.05, but 2.05 sets the booktype of +R DL discs to -ROM by default. Use 2.16 if your drive has 2.15 or use 2.06 if your drive has 2.05.
2.05c is for a Dell oem, so I assumed the next update 2.05d was also for a Dell oem. Only reading whats on that site.

i didn't have a Dell OEM in my machine its a packard bell. I really need to get back to the version i had before and i can then update from there.

I don't feel confident flashing back to my old drive by myself so i'll get someone in to do it for me.
