Hi there,
I have never burned a Dual Layer media yet, I think they are still too expensive (Personal Opinion).
But here's a few rules I have learned and I will follow when I do try:
1- Install the latest firmware on your burner.
2- Buy Verbatim DVD+R DL Media
DVD-R DL are still causing issues since they are pretty new and not all drives support them, even with the latest firmware.
3- Do not burn at MAX speed.
4- If you are going to burn a DL .ISO(.mds) burn with DVD Decrypter and/or Image Burn and load the .MDS not the .ISO
The .MDS has the Layer Break information, and should help creating a smooth DL burn.
5- Pop a bag of PopCorn and get ready to watch you movie on a DL media :)
Any other rules apply to DL media ?

I think you mostly covered them. I can only think of the following, some of which are merely strong advice for ANY burning habits...
-No multi-tasking. Especially during the burn. I have had only one coaster on a dual layer disc, and it occurred because my wife asked me to look something up on the web while a burn was in progress, and against my better judgement, I took this chance. The site I ended up at had a Flash video introduction, and while it was loading, my disc was suddenly ejected in mid-burn, followed by a error message from DVDDecrypter. I do not advise multi-tasking during burning at any time, but keep in mind that the economics become a bit more important when you have paid $2.00 or $3.00 or even more for a disc.
-Burn slow. The advice above (which is terrific, and which I have used for more than 50 successful burns) advises not to burn at "maximum." I would go one step further. I have used 2.4X for all of my dual layer burns, and I am NOT willing to run the risk of "upping the speed" until those dual layer discs are a lot less expensive. Thus, in my own opinion, I advise to "burn only at 2.4X, no matter what the label says."
Great advice, and it never hurts to collect the wisdom of a successful methodology all in one concise post. Thanks.
-Bruce

safari2000:
I am willing to post my own methodology, for what it is worth. It may not be the same as the one you were asking for, but it has only yielded one coaster in more than 50 burns.
If you are trying to back up a commercial DVD that you have purchased onto a dual layer blank, safely, with no additional compression, and with the layer break, follow these steps:
===============
Remove all discs from drives.
Open DVD Decrypter (make certain it is the most recent, final version. Make certain all settings are at the original "default" settings. There is only one exception, here. You may wish to set the "booktyping" on the discs. This is permissable.).
From the 'Mode' menu, select 'ISO' -> 'Read'.
Put the commercial DVD-9 disc which you own in the drive.
Take note of the 'Destination' file name.
Click the big 'Decrypt' button.
Wait. When that process has completed, take the DVD-9 original disc out of the drive.
From the 'Mode' menu, select 'ISO' -> 'Write'.
Put a new blank dual layer Verbatim DVD+R disc into your DVD burner.
Click the little folder icon - 'Browse for source file' - and select the .mds file created for you as part of the steps above.
Click the big 'Write' button.
Wait.
Finished.
=======================
A few reminders (all of which have been mentioned above):
-Make certain your burner is capable of burning dual layer media.
-Make certain your burner has the latest firmware upgrade.
-Use only Verbatim DVD+R dual layer discs.
-Burn slowly, at 2.4X.
-Do not try to multitask while burning.
-Check first to make certain your DVD player (or players) are actually able to play DVD+R dual layer burned media. Not all of them are.
-Do not use stick-on labels on the DVDs.
-In fact, follow all of the normal guidelines for successful burning.
====
Hope this is of some help to someone,
-Bruce

Thank you, Bruce999.
How about the dvds having newer encryptions (like King Kong).
Don't you think I need to process through DVDFab Decrypter to remove the encryption, and then if i follow your steps, will it work.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hello All.
I posted awhile back (maybe month or two ago) with problems I was having while trying to burn to DVD+R DL. I'll skip all of the details, but summarize by saying that I still can't get it to work without A.) having problems writing the lead-in on the disks, or B.) write address failures.
I did manage to get (what I thought was going to be) 2 succesful burns using Imgburn 1.3.0.0 last week, until I put them into my Sony DVP-NS975V and it gave a 'cannot play disc' for both discs. I checked the Imgburn log (luckily I saved it) and this is what it said...

Not being an expert with this, it looks as though the booktype did NOT change to DVD-ROM, like I specified before I clicked on the 'write' icon in Imgburn. Any thoughts? Ideas? I'm positive that I changed it beforehand.
By the way, this was done using my Toshiba Satellite laptop, Sony DRX-810UL (external) and Iomega external HD.
I just checked for new versions of firmware for my drives and noticed there is new firmware for the DRU-810A (1.0e) and DRU-810UL (2.0e). My next question is, which one is right? Both are rebadged Benq 1640DWs, so I'm confused as to which one to use? Maybe I used the incorrect FW last time I reflashed the drive and that's what's causing my failures when I try to burn DL DVDs???
BTW, I am using Verbatim DL disks and burning at 2.4x. The odd thing is, is that I've gotten a 'few' burns to work... here and there. It still puzzles me as to why I cannot make consistent DL burns.
Any info. on the firmware versions for the 810UL would be appreciated. Thanks.

my quote
just info,
this program is very easy to use..i have no coasters yet with d/l disks...great to make one to one copys with most movies..
CloneCD is the perfect tool to make backup copies of your music and data CDs, regardless of copy protection. CloneCD's award-winning user interface allows you to copy almost any CD in just a few mouse clicks.
Since the release of 5.0, CloneCD is not only able to copy CDs but also all DVD formats, such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD+R Dual Layer and DVD-RAM. The movies are copied 1:1 and therefore not modified (compressed). Note that to copy movie DVDs you also require AnyDVD.
CloneCD also works with other formats such as ISO and UDF files and copies CDs/DVDs with the new SafeDisc 3 Copy Protection System. CloneCD allows you to create perfect 1:1 copies of your valuable original compact discs. Should your copy-protected music CD not play in your car audio, the backup created by CloneCD will.
Slysoft combine knowledge and innovation with many years of experience and direct communication with customers to provide constant improvements, therefore making CloneCD the highest quality copying application around.
download, both are free to use for 21 days..

daman1,
Yes, I have tried DVD Decrypter to burn DLs... and that's where I usually have my problems. I thought I'd try it again using Imgburn, since that program is still being updated, figuring maybe a 'bug' or something was fixed that pertained to my system/setup etc.
I'm going to try putting the latest firmware (still need someone to clarify which to use) on my 810UL external and see what that does.
I've tried everything under the sun and still can't get some consistency when doing DL burns. Frustrating indeed.
Thanks to all for suggestions/ideas in advance.

One more thing real quick... what's the best way to 'reflash' a drive? Is there a preferred method? Just wondering.
I believe I reflashed my 810UL (with 2.0d) last time using DVD Decrypter, which was quite a while ago. Everything seemed to go ok, but maybe something happened that contributed to the burning failures???
Thoughts/comments/ideas... please don't hesitate to let me know.
Thanks again!

Hmmm...
I just checked http://forum.rpc1.org/portal.php to find out if they had anything on flashing a drive, but I cannot find anything. There's topics related to the drive itself, but no step-by-step instructions. I hate to sound like an idiot here, but I'd like to make sure I do it the right way...
I would imagine there are a number of ways to do it, so I'll use DVD Decrypter again, unless anyone else jumps in and recommends another method.
Thanks. I'll let you know what happens.

Well, there goes another Verb +R DL...
I updated the FW on the 810UL, rebooted, opened up Imgburn 1.3.0.0, inserted a blank Verb +R DL, set booktype to DVD-ROM, set write speed to 2.4x, and clicked 'write'. This is what happened...

Failed at 50%. Now, this is with my desktop PC... a Dell P4, 1.6, plenty of RAM, etc. This is what used to happen when I tried the desktop, so I'm not too surprised. I don't have a lot of confidence in the USB 2.0 PCI card that I installed a few months back... maybe that's it.
I'll give it one more try with the laptop and see what happens.

Now for the bad news, when I checked the first back-up, my Sony DVP-NS975V player said 'cannot read this disc'. I checked the other one and got the same thing. I remember seeing the info. screen on the right-hand side of Imgburn after the burn completes, this is what it said...

This time, I got the booktype correct (DVD-ROM), but why is it only showing me that there's 1 layer??? and a track path of 'parallel track path'??? I thought Imgburn uses OTP (opposite track path) to write?
As usual, if anyone sees anything out of the ordinary, please let me know. I didn't change any settings in Imgburn before burning (other than making sure booktype was set to DVD-ROM, and write speed was 2.4x).
I'll copy this post over to another thread that I had going a while back, if I can find it, to see if anyone has any suggestions... as some people may not see this.
Thanks in advance,
Gregg

This the guide:http://www.videohelp.com/~r0lZ/pgcedit/third_party/blutach/dl_bur... that i use to burn DL discs. The one thing i really like about doing it this way is i can pick the layer break. For those that don't know that's where the laser switches to the second layer. From what i've read that's why Nero seems to fail alot on DL discs, it doesn't handle the layer break well. Also the advantage of picking the layer break is sometimes you can choose a transition between scenes so you don't even notice that slight delay when it switches.
