Is it true that Single Layer Memorex DVD+R 16X DVD's have problems with stand alone DVD "recorders". Because I'm about to buy a stand alone DVD "recorder" with the ability to burn Dual Layer DVD's and I already have about 100 Single Layer Memorex DVD+R 16X DVD's and about 5 Dual Layer Fuji DVD+R 2.4 X. The single layer Memorex DVD+R 16x play fine on both my stand alone DVD "players" and computer. Should I switch brands just for the recorder or permanently because memorex has been fine when i backup my DVD's with dvd shrink/nero 6. Basicly which single layer and duel layer blank media work best for a stand alone DVD "recorder" with the ability to burn Dual Layer Discs (maybe the Lg progressive-scan multiformat dvd-r/-rw/+r/+r DL/+rw/Ram recorder).

Dude, dump the Memorex like it is on fire and get some good media such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. Memorex media is pretty much junk. I used alot of Memorex when I first started backing up dvd's, I got alot of coasters and had to go back and reburn alot of movies that were deteriorating after only a few months (the ones I could re-burn). Stick with the two above mentioned brands and you will never look back!

Those memorex may play fine now, but awhile down the road you will regret using them. The sad part is that the good stuff costs practically the same. Check out the dvd media section here for all kinds of good info on media. Can't stress it enough, don't use Memorex!

MS Windows XP MCE SP2, Intel P4 3.20 GHz, 2.0 GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce FX5600, Seagate 7200 rpm 200GB HDD, Sony SDMHS93 19" LCD, Field Value
Audio Adapter Creative SB0317 Audigy LS Sound Card, Liteon models,SHM-165H6S, 167to6c, All burns exclusively on genuine Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim media!

Memorex isn't a recommended brand around here because they use a variety of manufacturers for their media and it is impossible to know most of the time who made the media you're buying until you actually buy it and can ID its media code.

http://tinyurl.com/pqhw2 (link to 16X Memorex DVD mfr codes)

For example, Memorex uses the following manufactures for its 16X media: +R Ricoh, Verbatim (MCC), Ritek, CMC Mag, Moser Beaur (India), Philips, and Prodisc. Of these, only the Verbatim is considered very good quality.

If you are curious as to which disks you have you can download DVDIdentifier or use a number of other programs to find the media code.

Personally, I only use +RW media in my standalone DVD recorder, Sony or Verbatim +RW. +R and -R media have to be finalized before they can be read by other players. This finalization process on my standalone recorder has resulted in the loss of too many recordings for me in the past. RW media does not require finalization before being readable by other players. If I want an archival copy of a recording, I just make a copy onto +R or -R media with my computer system DVD burner. This also provides me the opportunity to edit out commercials, etc.

You can also go to http://www.videohelp.com and find your recorder and look at the comments there.

if they play fine for you then you should be happy as you are probably one of the few that fit into the 1% that memorex works for.if THEy work for you then keep using them , however many people do agree that memorex aren the best so if trouble arises further down the track then you might have to consider changing your media

just to let you know, and confirm what many have said, Memorex is crappy media! Most beginners don't realize this because Memorex is found in abundance in many stores so they think that it's good media when it's NOT. Here is a media guide:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
this will show you the manufacturers ID which confirms what Laddyboy and DavidW001 has already told you. Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim are the tops brands along with Sony, and Maxell..... keep in mind the made in Japan disks are the key! Although Verbatims, that are made in Taiwan are top notch (the only exception!). You can't go wrong with those disks.

and if you're buying the +Rs then you can try to booktype/bitset your drive so that the +Rs can be set to DVD-ROMs which are more compatible to most DVD players! read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
that's if your drive can be booktyped.
