I guess their is no digital connection possible. Of these two analog connections is VGA betteer?

Just going via experience i'd say component. I coonected my 360 up using a DVI>VGA connection, and while the quality is good I appear to get a shadow around objects.

There are a lot of differences b/w these two analog signals. Component carries YCbCr (Y=luminance or brightness, Cb=blue, Cr=red). VGA has a 15-pin connector which carries RGB, HV (horizontal and vertical sync) and other info such as refresh rates. VGA also carries about twice the bandwidth of component and is able to display >10 million color combinations compared to component's >2.7 million. Component is a compressed video signal. VGA is similar to HDMI/DVI as both can carry RGB - the difference being that VGA is analog and HDMI/DVI is digital.

How does this translate in the real world? I think the bottom line depends on your display and how it handles the component or VGA signal from the 360. Look at the Video section of the 360 wikipedia for supported resolutions of each type:
