1. DVD Decrypter is great. In my opinion the best for backing up games. Some games need to be rebuilt to work with swap magic so other tool may be required for some games. Also any game that is DVD9 like GT4, God Of war, or others just leave alone until you figure out how to rip a DVD9 (dual layer) down to a DVD5 (standard 4.7GB single layer)

2. Those tools get installed in the PS2, they stop the PS2 from resetting when you open the lid to Swap the Swap Magic disc for your back up disc.

3. DVD-R would be my first choice, DVD+R is good if your burner can booktype them to DVD-Rom. But since i most likely just confused you with all that start with DVD-R until you read up on booktyping and find out what your burner can do. 8X speed would be a great choice.
And NO MEMOREX! they are the worst.
Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden, Philips
Sony and Maxcell if they say made in Japan, do not buy them if they say made in Taiwan.

4. Swap Magic are a set of discs so there is nothing to put together.
If you mean the Magic Keys i have a modchip so i have no idea. But it should be pretty simple.

I would really just start searching and reading tutorials on backin up games. Most game will be strait up copy, but ther are some that will require a bit more knowledge. Make sure your burner's firmware is up to date. If not it could cause you problmes with backing up games. Make sure when you do back ups that NOTHING else on the PC is running or being used. BUrn the 8X DVD-R at 4X speed.
Just a few extra hints.

slimkit 3.6 pro will work or also the newest kit which is the Magic Keys II 3.8 with the new Swap Magic Coder.

I would go with the Swap Magic Coder doscs and Magic Keys II 3.8
they are metal and not plastic so they should be a higher quality tool, Pluse the new coder disc gives you options of using AR Max codes with your back ups which is something the regular Swap Magic version lacks, it also gives many people proples as they never seem to be able to load their back ups with codes when using Swap Magic and AR Max which is surely the reason Swap Magic Coder was invented
