Has anyone encountered this before?

[IMG]http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a15/Pokerfish/afterdawn/MPCVobSu...

Played in MPC 6.4.8.4 with DirectVobSub 2.36. The vertical bar of flickering interference appears at right, on about 1/4 of the width of the screen. It only appears when subtitles are used. If the subtitle file (.srt) is removed, the movie plays fine.

Any ideas?

If above doesn't work, here's just the link:

Try the internal subtitle renderer. See if it makes any difference.

Not sure how to enable the internal subtitle renderer. I've always used the combination of MPC and DirectVobSub in the past, and it gave me no problems. But I'm all for it if MPC can handle subs by itself.

I've uninstalled DirectVobSub, because there doesn't seem to be any way to prevent it from auto-loading when MPC is opened. Now I can't see subtitles.

I tried fiddling with the output settings in MPC. I tried both VMR7 and VMR9 (renderless) and got no results. There is a note under "Subtitles" in the options of MPC that says VMR7 requires WinXP, VMR9 requires DirectX 9.0, and both require a HW accelerated D3D video card. I believe my system meets all these requirements.

Is there anything else I need to do to use the internal renderer? If I try to load a subtitle file manually (under the File menu of MPC), I get the message about setting the outputs.

Like I said, I've never used MPC alone to shows subs. Any help is greatly appreciated.

XP is no longer a requirement for VMR7, at least not in recent builds.
You can use MPC's filter override settings to block a filter from loading if you still want to use directvobsub with other apps.

Sounds like VMR7/9 is not being used. What video card?

"Uninstalled"? Sounds like you are using the old VobSub. Directvobsub was moved to vsfilter some years ago, so you could also try that if you are stuck with using overlay.

This is an older machine, so it's got an Nvidia TNT2 Pro. The configuration has Direct 3D settings, so I assume it's compatible with MPC's sub renderer.

You're right that I was using VobSub 2.23. I was calling it DirectVobSub because that's what it said in the Help-->"About" dialogue for VobSub, and it's also the name of the filter being used in MPC (under "Play"-->"Filters").

I ran a search for VSFilter.dll on my HDD, and it turns out I do have it in the "Program Files" folder for a codec pack I installed earlier. I don't know if it's being used. Where should it be located? I tried putting it in System32, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

So as of now, I can't see subtitles since I uninstalled VobSub 2.23. I also can't seem to get MPC to show subs with its internal renderer.

Thanks very much for your help.

Doesn't matter where vsfilter goes, you just need to register it. "regsvr32.exe vsfilter.dll"

Yeah, probably a TNT2 can't handle VMR7/9. For an older PC, I would suggest mplayer.
