Just a theoretical question - hopefully someone may be able to help me...

*I'm a relative noob so bare with me if some of what i state is incorrect*

Does the BIOS section of the PS2 contain the software that inhibits backup copies of games being played on the PS2? If so, would it not be possible for a company to press a disc with software on it which overwrites the BIOS to ignore this set of instructions, thus enabling the PS2 to play backups and imports etc?

Its just a theory :)

in theory, yes. The BIOS is the software it runs off of. Just like a modchip doesn do anything that it claims to do until you flash it with an aftermarket BIOS or OS
They do not ship chips with the aftermarket BIOS or OS on them because without them they would not play back ups, which makes them quite legal. It is when you flash them and they can that it makes them illegal due to the fact that you can now play the back up games.

I figure if the PS2 BIOS could of been hacked then it would have by now. If they can figure out how to circumvent the system with modchips and Swap Magic then they could have figured out how to install a hacked BIOS via a disc or memory card exploit.

So i can only assume that for one reson or another that it just would not work so they found other option.
Just like they are now starting to hack the Xbox 360. If it can be done (like a softmod) then they will find a way.

...ah ha - yes come to think of it that makes sense - either that or they realised that they would only probably ever sell one copy of the hack disc which would then be passed around

well there's a way to get around that, like with swap magic's disks where you can't burn them.. (if ya look at the bottom of 'em) but they'd have to figure a way to get around using burned copies of that software with swap magic! (like how I swap my old old old swap magic discs with a burned d/l'd copy of a new one, then my game, so I do 3 swaps total....)

well it beats shelling out the extra cash for the new set of disks, and especially beats rebuying a game if it breaks or becomes unplayable.. Personally I think they should ship out the new updates to customers free, maybe charge shipping but meh.. new games require new versions, some games require a seperate disk to swap (a special loader disk) I've got two or three versions of those, so for some games it's more than three. I still personally think it beats moding it with a chip, as even professionaly installed you still run risks of power management issues, especially on the new PS2's... but on over three hundred games only a couple have given me a few headaches. :P
